Summary

Writes and edits work products of the Office of Inspector General (OIG) of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System (Board) and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), to include audit, inspection, evaluation, and investigative reports and briefings; recurring or periodic documents, such as the OIG's semiannual reports to Congress; internal communications; and web content. Ensures written products comply with the highest editorial standards for clarity, language, logical organization, and style. Serves as a resource for OIG staff on editorial matters, such as grammar, punctuation, and style. May assist with digital media presence for internal and external communications.

Duties And Responsibilities
  • Assists teams or individual authors with the drafting and editing of audit, evaluation, inspection, or investigation reports; policies and procedures; correspondence; and other written products. Collaborates with authors to ensure that work products present data and complex information clearly, logically, and concisely.
  • Ensures audit, evaluation, inspection, or investigation reports (a) accurately reflect the intent of the report’s findings and conclusions; (b) are in accordance with OIG report writing and style standards; (c) can be understood and used effectively by their intended audience; and (d) are written in a clear, concise, and convincing manner. Advises staff on the sufficiency of the product message and use of criteria and assists in refocusing findings, if necessary, to ensure that cause is clearly addressed.
  • May have primary responsibility for writing a work product. Conducts appropriate research and coordinates with and receives input from applicable staff.
  • With limited supervision, edits the work of other staff to ensure that work products conform to plain-language standards for the intended audience, current English-usage standards, and established editorial style. Recommends substantive, organizational, stylistic, and grammatical changes. Ensures that changes are appropriately coordinated with staff and managers.
  • Devises and encourages different data visualization methods or approaches to present data or complex information in easy-to-understand format for readers, e.g., infographics, tables, and figures. Ensures that content may be made Section 508 accessible. Works with graphics resources as appropriate.
  • Serves as a resource within the OIG regarding plain-language standards, current English-usage standards, and established editorial style. May develop or contribute to policies, procedures, guidance, or manuals on topics such as report writing, grammar and style, graphics, and web communications and train OIG staff on these initiatives.
  • Works to ensure appropriate technology and software are used to improve editing and publishing processes.
  • Develops and edits content for OIG’s internal communications, the OIG’s external website and the OIG’s SharePoint site and ensures that posted content is authorized, written in plain language for the web, free of errors, and compliant with OIG web standards and Section 508 accessibility requirements. Works with Board Information Technology (IT) staff and others as necessary to post web content.
  • Coordinates the flow of work products from the OIG to the Print Shop or private vendors and ensures publications are published as designed. Provides guidance on the OIG’s requirements for printed products.
  • Establishes and/or adheres to schedules for completing phases of work products, e.g., draft and final documents, and ensures deadlines are met.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Position requires strong analytical, writing, editing, proofreading, and web content management skills. Prior OIG writer-editor experience is strongly desired. Specific requirements include mastery of grammar, style, and standard usage; knowledge of The Chicago Manual of Style and other recognized style guides; mastery of oral and written communication to facilitate effective communication of constructive comments and criticism of reports, to help articulate report message, negotiate solutions acceptable to teams and management, and implement agreed-upon solutions. Experience in coordinating the editorial print and production process, and using SharePoint as a collaborative tool to manage and edit documents. Strong time management, multitasking, and organizational skills; attention to detail; and knowledge of standard computer software, including Adobe Creative Suite (in particular, InDesign) and Microsoft Office software. Knowledge of social media trends for government agencies. Knowledge of graphic design principles and implementation to include layout, branding, and visual communications analysis in both static (e.g., graphs) and dynamic (e.g., video) modes. Ability to collaborate with staff at all levels of the organization. Ability to adapt style, manner of presentation, and format as appropriate to meet the expectations of a varied audience, including Board members, Federal Reserve System employees, CFPB employees, Congress, and the public. Ability to write in plain language for the web; experience in web proofreading, editing, and content management. Ability to understand information in fields unrelated to editing and publishing disciplines, such as the supervision and regulation of financial institutions, in order to identify and resolve inconsistencies and inaccuracies. Experience with video, graphic, and social networking strategies is desirable. Ability in HTML/XML, along with experience in brand identity and external outreach initiatives development is preferred. Must have or be able to obtain and maintain the required security clearance appropriate to the sensitivity of information and systems accessed. Is subject to the Board's drug testing program. At the FR-24 grade, knowledge level is typically achieved through completion of a bachelor's degree, preferably in English, journalism, or a related field, or through extensive work-related experience. Three years of specialized experience in technical editing and writing with increasing levels of responsibility is required. Knowledge of and experience with accessibility/Section 508 compliance is highly desirable. In addition, at the FR-25 grade, four years of specialized experience in technical editing and writing with increasing levels of responsibility is required.

Note

The expected salary range for this role is $96,700 - $144,300, which spans all the posted grades. Final offers are based on the grade for which you minimally qualify and are determined by experience and education, as well as internal and external factors.
