Job summary

Qualifications

  • Must be able to read, write and communicate effectively with patients and staff.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with wound care under licensed supervision.
  • Provide basic hygiene care and unsterile treatments.
  • Take vital signs and assist with range of motion exercises.
  • Advocate for patients while maintaining confidentiality and dignity.
  • Demonstrate wound care techniques to patients and families.
  • Maintain knowledge of sanitation, infection control and equipment usage.
  • Monitor patient environment for safety and report deficiencies.
  • Notify nursing staff of patient condition changes and assist as needed.
  • Escort patients and transport supplies as required.
  • Pursue ongoing professional growth through training and reading.

Full Time Position
Wound Care Technician
Primary Purpose

Provides wound care to patients to reduce complications, shorten healing time, and support maximum recovery.

Minimum Specifications
Education
Must have completed or hold one of the following
  • Two (2) years of experience in a Med/Surg environment
  • A formal nurse aide course
  • A current certified nurse aide registry
  • A medical assistant course
  • A current medical assistant certificate
  • A patient care technician course
  • A current patient care technician certificate
  • Must be currently enrolled in an accredited school of professional nursing and must have documentation of the basic fundamentals of nursing from the school
  • Must be a graduate from an accredited school of nursing
  • Parkland's job-specific training program
Experience
  • Previous experience as a wound care technician preferred.
Certification / Registration / Licensure
Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Heart Saver (First Aid/CPR/AED) required from one of the following
  • American Heart Association
  • American Red Cross Rescuer
  • Military Training Network
  • American Heart Association
  • American patient-centeredepatient-valuedining Network

Responsibilities
  • Assist with wound care.
  • Performs specified patient care activities under the direction of a licensed medical provider, including providing basic hygiene care, unsterile treatments, taking vital signs, and range of motion exercises.
  • Lifts, ambulates, and feeds patients in accordance with patient-centered care, providing optimal care services to patients and their families.
  • Serves as a patient advocate by responding to a patient's needs and special requests. Maintains open communication and honors patients' rights and confidentiality while providing optimal service to patients and their families.
  • Demonstrates wound care to patients and family members in collaboration with the licensed medical provider.
  • Maintains, updates, and utilizes knowledge of sanitation, infection control, safety, supplies and equipment usage to optimize customer care and services.
  • Monitors conditions of patient environment and equipment, i.e. wheelchairs, bed rails, scales, floor conditions, and corrects the condition and/or reports the deficiencies or defects for immediate correction as appropriate.
  • Monitors ongoing patient status, including wounds, and responds to a patient's change in condition by notifying and assisting nurses and other health team members in handling patient care needs.
  • Escorts patients to other areas, cleans designated or special areas, provides or requests translation services when applicable, performs quality control checks, and delivers patient specimens when applicable in order to provide optimal patient care.
  • Stocks and distributes supplies, transports linens, and completes charge vouchers.
  • Takes responsibility for own professional growth and development by attending in-services and reading internal publications and integrates this knowledge as appropriate to the job.
  • Maintains a positive working relationship with staff, patients, family members, and physicians to ensure the patient receives the best possible care.
  • Maintains knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, policies, laws, and guidelines that impact the Wound Care area.
  • Develops effective internal controls that promote adherence to applicable state/federal laws, and the program requirements of accreditation agencies and federal, state, and private health plans.
  • Seeks advice and guidance as necessary to ensure proper understanding.

  • Makes recommendations to supervisor, implements, and monitors results as appropriate in support of the overall goals of the department and Parkland.
