Job summary

MedStar Health is seeking an obstetric surgical support technician to assist with cesarean deliveries, deliveries, and related maternal care in our Labor & Delivery unit. You will help prepare the OR, assist with procedures, and ensure patient safety and comfort throughout the care team’s workflow.

The role requires completion of an accredited surgical technology program, High School diploma or GED, and CNA or PCT training, with CPR certification within 90 days.

Qualifications

  • High School or equivalent required.
  • Completion of an accredited surgical technology program required.
  • CNA or Patient Care Technician training required.
  • CPR (BLS) certification within 90 days required.
  • Surgical tech certification may be preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist obstetric/gynecologic surgeries and circumcisions, maintaining aseptic technique.
  • Set up sterile equipment; assist with room turnover and instrument sterilization.
  • Collect blood/urine specimens and document observations in the health record.
  • Support patients with ADLs, mobility, nutrition, and comfort under supervision.
  • Record vitals and assist with point-of-care testing.
  • Perform venipuncture, EKGs, Foley care, and basic patient care tasks.
  • Ensure patient dignity, privacy, and safety; alert care team of changes.
  • Prepare patients for exams and procedures; assist with delegated tasks.
  • Order, receive, stock, and distribute supplies; maintain sterile integrity.
  • Attend meetings and participate in quality improvement initiatives.

About the Job
General Summary of Position

Performs a variety of technical duties to assist with obstetric surgery and patient care in the Labor & Delivery areas. Must have completed an accredited surgical technology training program. Functions as a member of the patient-centered care team to provide direct patient care activities in the obstetrical services/maternal and newborn areas under the supervision of a Registered Nurse or a medical provider. Assists nursing and medical staff with performance of procedures and tests. Assists patients with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) and performs care activities such as specimen collection phlebotomy intravenous (IV) insertion Foley Catheter care and documentation of observations in the health record. Incumbents in this position may perform all or a combination of the duties described depending upon the assigned work area and the specific needs of the patients and the department.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assists with the patient preparation and execution of obstetric and gynecological surgical procedures (e.g. cesarean deliveries emergent hysterectomies cerclage and D&C) and circumcisions by anticipating surgeon needs maintaining aseptic technique and demonstrating knowledge of specialty instrumentation.
  • Sets up sterile equipment sterile field and surgical tables checks equipment functionality ensures instrument integrity and assists with room turnover and sterilization of the OR and Labor & Delivery environments. Assists in surgical count and breakdown of LDRs and Nursery treatment areas immediately after procedures are completed.
  • Collects blood and urine specimens. Appropriately identifies labels and transports specimens. Cleans and disposes of surgical instruments fluids linens trash and other materials post-procedure.
  • Assists patients with ADLs personal hygiene mobility nutrition toileting positioning and postmortem care under the supervision of nursing or medical staff.
  • Measures and records vital signs intake/output height/weight and other clinical data; performs point of care testing for glucose monitoring and assists with other bedside diagnostic procedures.
  • Performs venipuncture EKGs specimen collection Foley catheter and perineal care simple wound care and initiates CPR as needed. Applies oxygen equipment (e.g. nasal cannula and face mask) as directed by the registered nurse or medical provider.
  • Supports the care team during vaginal births prepares instruments and treatment areas and maintains equipment such as fetal monitors and infant warmers.
  • Ensures patient dignity privacy and comfort; provides 1:1 observation when necessary; rounds on patients and communicates changes in condition to the registered nurses and/or other members of the care team.
  • Prepares patients for exams and procedures assists with treatments and performs delegated clinical tasks as needed.
  • Ensures clean and safe patient environments maintains order in storage areas and supports environmental services tasks as needed.
  • Orders receive stocks and distributes supplies and equipment; ensures sterile integrity of supplies and assists in maintaining par levels.
  • Attends staff meetings and educational sessions; participates in quality improvement initiatives; serves as a technical resource for surgical instruments and equipment and certified nursing assistant or patient care tech role responsibilities.
Minimal Qualifications
Education
  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Completion of an accredited surgical technology training program required and
  • Certified Nursing Assistant - completion of a certified nursing assistant training program required or
  • Patient Care Technician - completion of a patient care technician training program required
Experience
  • 6 months - 1 year experience as a surgical technologist preferred
  • 6 months - 1 year experience as a certified nursing assistant or patient care technician preferred
Licenses and Certifications
  • CNA - Certified Nursing Assistant Upon Hire required or
  • Certified Patient Care Technician Upon Hire required
  • SURG-TECH - Surgical Tech - Certified Upon Hire preferred
  • CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (includes BLS) for healthcare providers from either the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross within 90 Days required
  • Additional unit/specialty certifications may vary by department or business unit.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
  • Competency in case procedure preparation and completion.
  • Verbal and written communication skills.
  • Basic computer skills preferred.
