Job summary

MedStar Health’s Washington Hospital Center is seeking a surgical technologist to assist with a wide range of operative duties. You will anticipate the surgeon’s needs, prepare cases per preference cards, and ensure equipment operates correctly under direct supervision.

Responsibilities include maintaining aseptic technique, handling specimens, and serving as a resource for OR staff. You will also participate in quality improvement teams and assist with patient transportation when needed.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Graduation from a surgical technology program required.
  • Hospital-based training completion required.

  • May serve as a technical resource for OR staff regarding instruments and equipment.
  • Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
  • Performs indirect patient care activities such as patient transportation as needed.
  • Provides comfort and support for preoperative patients and respects privacy.
  • Responds to questions from patient families promptly and courteously.

About the Job
General Summary of Position

Performs a variety of technical duties to assist with surgery.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Anticipates sequential needs of the surgeon during the operative procedure.
  • Assists with case preparation following preference card guidelines.
  • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies procedures quality standards and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
  • Ensures that equipment is functioning properly and immediately notifies appropriate personnel of any problems.
  • Functions as surgical assistant during operative procedures performing specified activities under the direct supervision of the surgeon. May act as second assistant by providing exposure and holding retractors.
  • Identifies and handles specimens appropriately.
  • Maintains aseptic techniques; actively monitors situations that could lead to breaches in aseptic technique.
  • May function as a technical resource person for OR staff providing information relating to instruments and equipment.
  • Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
  • Performs indirect patient care activities such as patient transportation as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Provides comfort and support for preoperative patients by demonstrating sensitivity to patient's care and privacy.
  • Responds to questions from patient families and significant others in a prompt courteous positive and knowledgeable manner and/or refers to appropriate personnel.
Minimal Qualifications
Education
  • High School Diploma or GED required and
  • graduation from a school of surgical technology required or
  • completion of hospital-based training. required
Experience
  • Less than 1 year 6 months experience as a surgical technologist or graduation from a school of surgical technology program. required
  • One year of relevant professional-level work experience may be substituted for one year of required education.
Licenses and Certifications
  • CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (includes BLS and NRP) for healthcare providers from either the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross within 90 Days required and
  • Additional unit/specialty certifications may vary by department or business unit.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
  • Competency in case procedure preparation and completion in all services.
  • Verbal and written communication skills.
  • Basic computer skills preferred.

USD $25.86 - USD $46.12 /Hr.
