Job summary

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) seeks a Highway Maintenance Specialist in Silverton, CO for a winter-season, full-time role from October 1 through April 30. A Class A or B CDL is required to operate heavy equipment and perform hands-on repairs in challenging weather.

The job involves on-call duties, teamwork, and maintaining safety on mountainous roads. Responsibilities include snow plowing, operating heavy equipment, repairing signs and guardrails, and general road maintenance,

Qualifications

• Must have at least two (2) years of physical labor and/or heavy equipment operation experience.
• Has a strong commitment to working safely.
• Wants to work outdoors and likes physically demanding work.
• Adapts to changing conditions and works well in a team.
• Communicates effectively in safety-critical situations.
• Experience operating equipment such as dump trucks, front end loaders, bulldozers, backhoes, etc.
• Has basic computer skills and can learn new software/equipment.
• State service experience is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Plowing snow and maintaining roadways in winter conditions.
• Operating heavy equipment (e.g., tandem dump truck, loader, tractor mower).
• Installing and repairing guardrails, signs, and lighting.
• Filling potholes, setting traffic signs, and removing debris.
• Maintaining equipment and performing minor repairs.
• On-call and shift work; respond to emergencies outside regular hours.
