Job summary

South Dakota Department of Transportation seeks Winter Maintenance Seasonal workers for snow and ice removal on State highways, based in Flandreau. Two positions available with day and night shifts, approximately 40 hours per week, in a seasonal, non-benefited role.

Applicants must be 18+, able to operate heavy equipment, and hold a valid driver's license with a Class A/B CDL and N: Tank Vehicles endorsement (or obtain within 30 days).

Responsibilities

  • Snow and ice removal on State highways during inclement weather.
  • Perform a variety of highway maintenance tasks.
  • Install, direct, and replace signs, delineators and permanent traffic control devices.
  • Maintain and repair department facilities; assist in preventive maintenance and equipment repair.
  • Respond to emergencies and ensure safe work zones and public safety awareness.

Job description

Position Title: Winter Maintenance Seasonal

  • Day Shift - 1 Position
  • Night Shift - 1 Positions - Shifts Vary From 3:30 pm - 12:00 am

Minimum Salary: $22.80 - $24.60 per hour depending on experience

Closing Date: March 31, 2027

*Seasonal positions can be filled prior to the closing date.*

The normal winter season is approximately September 24 through May 8.

Duties:

Winter Maintenance Seasonal workers are responsible for snow and ice removal on State highways during inclement weather. Duties will also include performing a variety of highway maintenance tasks.

Duties may include but are not limited to performing roadway surface maintenance activities; installing, directing, and replacing signs, delineators and permanent traffic control devices; maintaining and repairing department facilities; performing preventative maintenance and equipment repair; responding to emergencies and other incidents; providing temporary traffic control through and around work zones and emergency sites; and promoting a safe work environment and participating in public safety awareness activities.

Hours:

The anticipated hours would be 40 hours per week, with the possibility of overtime to include working weekends and holidays during emergencies and inclement weather. The hours needed will vary depending on the severity of winter conditions.

Please note this is a temporary or seasonal, non-benefited position, exempt form civil service.

Requirements:

Must be 18 years of age and have the ability to operate heavy equipment. Must have a valid driver's license and Class A or Class B commercial driver's license (CDL) with a N: Tank Vehicles endorsement. If you do not have a N: Tank Vehicles endorsement you have 30 days from the date of hire to obtain it. Employee will be subject to pre-employment, random, reasonable suspicion, post-accident, follow-up accident, and return-to-duty drug and alcohol testing. Offers of employment are conditional upon successful completion of a drug screening. Applicants will be required to authorize the Department of Transportation to obtain a complete driving record.

Work assignments are frequently performed outside in all weather conditions and around highway traffic. Incumbent must be willing to report to work during inclement weather conditions, including weekdays, weekends, holidays, early mornings, and evenings. Incumbent must be able to report to their assigned Department of Transportation Shop within 30 minutes, under normal driving conditions, from the time of notification.
