Job summary

Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is seeking multiple winter-season Highway Maintenance Worker positions in South Central Region (Area 1: Ellensburg and surrounding communities). The team maintains I-90 corridors and regional roadways, performing snow removal, de-icing, culvert cleaning, and traffic control to keep roads safe.

The roles require working 40 hours per week on a 4 x 10 schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Qualifications

• Highway and roadway maintenance experience including pavement, drainage, erosion control, and related infrastructure.
• Heavy equipment operation skills with various equipment types (loaders, sweepers, backhoes, dump trucks, snow plows, deicers).
• Valid Class A CDL with N endorsement and no airbrake restriction; CDL Medical Card or ability to obtain.
• Commitment to safety through PASP, confined spaces, fall protection, and hazardous materials handling.
• Proficiency with electronic systems for timekeeping, maintenance tracking, and standard computer apps.
• Demonstrates a growth mindset and service-oriented approach to public safety.

Responsibilities

• Perform highway maintenance in outdoor environments under varying weather and traffic conditions.
• Operate and maintain a wide variety of highway maintenance equipment.
• Safely use hand tools, power tools, and PPE to support operations.
• Support year-round and emergency maintenance, including night/weekend shifts.
• Travel within maintenance area to perform duties and attend meetings or training.
• Use computerized controls and mobile devices to support maintenance and complete documentation.
• Coordinate with supervisors, contractors, law enforcement, and the traveling public to complete work.
