Job Responsibilities

This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the conservation of water birds in South Carolina as part of the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR).

  • Develop, direct, and conduct projects for wading and marsh birds, including nest monitoring, breeding surveys, trapping and banding, and associated vegetation surveys across South Carolina.
  • Conduct wading bird aerial breeding season surveys using small aircraft.
  • Provide technical assistance to the public on wading and marsh bird protections, nuisance issues, and related topics.
  • Represent SCDNR on enforcement, permitting issues, and other situations as required.
  • Develop and maintain large multi-year databases using Excel, Access, Survey123, Bird Banding Lab data portal, and GIS; perform data analysis using Program R.
  • Manage grants, budgets, and prepare monthly and annual reports.
  • Create and disseminate public outreach materials and deliver educational programs at meetings and to the public.
  • Coordinate, train, and supervise temporary personnel for data collection.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Bird Conservation Coordinator.
Minimum and Additional Requirements

A master's degree in biology, chemistry, or wildlife management with two years of relevant experience, or a bachelor's degree with four years of experience in fish, wildlife, or marine management or research.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of wading and marsh biology and southeastern habitat management.
  • Knowledge of laws and regulations related to native migratory birds.
  • Skills in conducting surveys, identifying species, trapping, banding, and using survey tools.
  • Experience with data collection, database management, GIS, Program R, and Microsoft Office.
  • Strong organizational, reporting, and budgeting skills.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, with multiple stakeholder groups.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, supervise staff, and endure environmental conditions.
  • Willingness to work long hours, travel, and perform aerial surveys.
