Job summary

The Nature Conservancy in the USA seeks a NC Sandhills NFWF Burn Crew Manager to lead a 4-8 person burn crew under a Burn Boss, focusing on prescribed fire, restoration, and preserve maintenance across the Sandhills region. Two-year funding applies; FFT2 qualification preferred/required.

The role requires wildfire operations experience, certification, and the ability to supervise staff and volunteers, operate equipment safely, and travel to remote sites as needed.

Qualifications

• High school diploma and 1-year training in fire operations, science-related field or related land management experience.
• Qualified Fire Fighter Type 1 (Squad Boss) and FFT1 task book completion.
• Must meet physical fitness standards and have a valid driver’s license.
• Experience supervising staff or volunteers and operating various equipment safely.
• May require CPR or herbicide license.

Responsibilities

• Participates in prescribed fire and wildfire activities including burn unit prep and mop up.
• Manages staff and volunteers; maintains equipment and supplies.
• Supports restoration projects such as thinning and planting.
• Maintains preserves and buildings; repairs fences and gates; grounds upkeep.
• Assists on wildland fire operations regionally with partners; may travel.
• Qualified staff must be FFT2 when participating in prescribed burns.
