Job summary

The Nature Conservancy is seeking a Burn Crew Manager to supervise a two-person crew for wildland fire work at Mountain Longleaf and Cahaba River National Wildlife Refuges. You will lead burn operations, maintain equipment, and support prescribed fire activities under a Burn Boss or other command position.

This seasonal role runs January 4, 2027 to April 23, 2027. Applicants should have FFT1, two seasons of Senior Burn Crew experience, strong physical fitness, a valid driver's license, and the

Qualifications

• High school diploma and 1-year training in fire operations or related field.
• Qualified Fire Fighter Type 1 (Squad Boss) and completion of FFT1 task book.
• Two or more seasons as a Senior Burn Crew Member or equivalent.
• Must meet physical fitness standards as set by Fire Manager and TNC Fire Manual.
• Experience operating and maintaining equipment.
• Experience supervising staff or volunteers is required.
• May require CPR and herbicide application licenses.

Responsibilities

• Lead and mentor Burn Crew Members during fire operations.
• Assist with logistics, expenses, time reporting, and administrative tasks for squad members.
• Convey work instructions to Burn Crew members.
• Monitor progress toward fire management goals and ensure safety.
• Make fire line decisions based on fire behavior and resources.
• Perform non-fire land management duties when conditions are unsuitable for prescribed fire.
• Must have a valid driver’s license and good driving record.
