Job summary

The Nature Conservancy in South Carolina seeks a Burn Crew Manager to lead a three-person crew and serve as liaison with fire management staff. The role supports prescribed burns across piney forests and other terrains, coordinating operations, logistics, and safety.

Based in Awendaw, SC, the position requires strong leadership, NWCGcertified fire qualifications, and a willingness to travel. Housing is provided, and work may involve long days and weekend shifts.

Qualifications

• Qualified Fire Fighter Type 1 (Squad Boss) and successful FFT1 task book.
• Ability to carry a 45lb-pack 3 miles in <45 minutes to achieve NWCG arduous rating.
• Experience supervising staff or volunteers is required.
• Experience operating and maintaining equipment including 4WD vehicles, Type-6 Engines, ATVs/UTVs, chainsaws, drip torch, etc.
• Willingness to travel extensively and occasionally work weekends and maintain a flexible schedule.
• Ability to perform physical work in inclement weather and under adverse conditions.
• Must have a valid driver’s license and compliant with Auto Safety Program.

Responsibilities

• Lead burn crew and coordinate with fire management staff.
• Supervise three seasonal Burn Crew Technicians and monitor progress toward fire management goals.
• Maintain time/expense records, equipment repairs, and purchasing supplies for ongoing needs.
• Make key decisions on the fire line based on fire behavior and available resources.
• Assist on wildland fire operations with partners as needed and travel statewide.
• Pursue ongoing professional development and stay current on burn techniques and equipment.
