Job summary

KBR is seeking a Wildland Fire Risk Scientist to support USGS efforts on wildfire risk to buildings and the wildland-urban interface. The role requires advanced science support in remote sensing, GIS, and statistical analysis, with opportunities to publish and develop datasets for national-scale risk mapping.

The candidate should have a PhD or advanced degree in ecology or related field, 3–5 years fire ecology experience, and be eligible for a background check.

Qualifications

• Requires 3-5 years of fire ecology experience and knowledge of plant community dynamics across the landscape.
• Must have 3-year residency in the United States.
• Ability to obtain a national agency check and background investigation after hire.

Responsibilities

• Forward research in wildfire exposure and risk to buildings and WUI to inform US DOI and USWFS risk assessments.
• Advance methods to predict wildfire exposure and damage at national or larger scales using simulations and ML.
• Lead development and publication of journal articles related to this research.
• Develop, maintain, and expand datasets quantifying building losses caused by wildfires.
• Develop prototypes and data sources for non-building assets impacted by wildfires.
• Develop and analyze WUI datasets using building footprints, census data, land cover, and fire occurrence data.
