Job summary

Overstory is seeking a Staff Data Scientist, Wildfire, to lead the scientific foundation of our Fuel Detection Model. You will translate satellite and environmental data into an understanding of vegetation structure, fuel loads, and wildfire risk, guiding both research and production systems.

Working with ML engineers and a product team, you will shape model accuracy, validation approaches, and the integration of fire science with data-driven methods to prevent outages and reduce wildfire

Qualifications

• 8+ years of applied research or data science in wildfire science or related fields.
• Deep expertise in remote sensing and geospatial analysis with satellite data.
• Strong modeling skills in Python with GeoPandas, scikit-learn, PyTorch, or XGBoost.
• Track record designing validation studies and evaluation frameworks.
• Excellent communication across technical and non-technical audiences.

Responsibilities

• Lead research into vegetation structure, fuel conditions, and wildfire risk from satellite, LiDAR, and env data.
• Design validation methodologies, including ground-truth and uncertainty quantification.
• Prototype ML approaches and work with ML engineers to productionize them.
• Integrate fire science with data-driven methods and define modeling standards.
• Communicate findings to engineers, product teams, and wildfire science communities.
• Mentor ML engineers on scientific methodology and domain reasoning.
