Job summary

The Louisiana Department of Health invites you to join the WIC team as a Health Educator. You will provide nutrition education, conduct health screenings, and support families in making healthier choices across pregnancy, infancy, and early childhood programs.

You will engage with pregnant and postpartum women, infants, and children, delivering education, referrals, and resources to enhance community health outcomes. This role offers hands-on program work in a public health setting.

Qualifications

• One year of experience in nutritional education or counseling, food service, or administrative services.
• Six semester hours in food and/or nutrition services; OR
• One year of vocational or technical school training in a dietetic assistant curriculum.

Responsibilities

• Provides direct nutrition education and outreach to pregnant women, postpartum and breastfeeding women, infants, and children.
• Educates WIC participants and caregivers on program benefits, participant rights and responsibilities, WIC-approved foods, and shopping procedures.
• Performs anthropometric measurements and health assessments for WIC participants.
• Conducts income and nutrition screenings and enters participant information into the LA WIC system.
• Reviews and assesses participant vaccination records and provides referrals to appropriate health and community resources.
• Collects blood samples and performs hemoglobin testing for WIC participants in accordance with program requirements.
• Schedules WIC appointments and follows up with participants regarding missed appointments and required services.
