Job summary

The City of New York’s NYC Parks, in the Environment and Planning division, seeks a Community Coordinator to advance wetlands mitigation, restoration, and outreach on City parkland. Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree plus two years in community work or related duties, or

Responsibilities

• Coordinate wetlands and aquatic habitat mitigation and management on City parkland under the Wetlands Compliance Specialist.
• Update Wetlands Restoration Opportunities database and map, visualize, and analyze vector and raster data using ArcGIS and Access.
• Support policy research and tasks to develop a comprehensive wetlands mitigation program for City parkland.
• Review proposals, plans, designs, contracts, permits, and construction documents related to wetlands restoration or impact.
• Collaborate with stakeholders across agencies to achieve project goals.
• Conduct field work in freshwater and tidal wetlands to support mitigation and restoration efforts.
• Prepare maps, figures, reports, and presentations for staff, stakeholders, and regulatory agencies.

Job description

NYC Parks is the steward of over 30,000 acres of land 14 percent of New York City including more than 5,000 individual properties ranging from Coney Island Beach and Central Park to community gardens and Greenstreets. We look after 660,000 street trees, and two million more in parks.

The Environment and Planning division aims to protect, restore, and expand New York City Parks including green spaces and natural areas to maximize their benefits for environmental and community health and resilience. The Natural Resources Group within Environment and Planning manages over 12,000 acres of natural areas across the five boroughs, including forests, grasslands, and wetlands and has secured tens of millions of dollars of grant from state, federal and private sources over the past decades to fund restoration and management across these ecosystems.

Major Responsibilities

• Under the direction of the Wetlands Compliance Specialist, provide administrative, technical, research, and field assistance in the coordination of wetlands and aquatic habitat mitigation and management on City parkland.
• Use ArcGIS and Microsoft Access to update the Wetlands Restoration Opportunities database and to map, visualize and analyze vector and raster data.
• Conduct policy research and administrative tasks to support the development of a comprehensive wetlands mitigation program on City parkland.
• Assist in the review of proposals, plans, designs, contracts, permit applications, construction documents, and specifications generated internally and by other agencies, private organizations and their contractors for projects restoring or impacting wetlands on City parkland.
• Collaborate with multiple stakeholders in an interdisciplinary and governmental context to achieve project goals.
• Conduct field work as needed in freshwater and tidal wetlands to support the development of the mitigation program, wetlands restoration, and wetlands protection.
• Prepare maps, figures, reports, and presentations for internal staff, technical and public audiences and regulatory agencies.

Work Location: The Grove, Rego Park, Queens

Duration: 9 Months. 35 hours per week. Expected Start Date 09/14/2026

Fees: Hired candidates will be subject to a processing fee of $85.00. Hired candidates who are not currently employed by the City will be subject to a $104.50 background check fee.

Minimum Qualifications

• A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
• High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
• Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.

Preferred Skills

• A degree with a specialization in natural resource management, environmental science, planning, or policy or a related field. 2. Knowledge of environmental policy, including state and federal regulatory agency structure and processes. 3. Experience making maps, editing data, and conducting analysis on vector and raster data with ArcGIS, python, and ModelBuilder. 4. Knowledge of wetland and aquatic ecology, ecological restoration, wetlands mitigation, and/or flora and fauna of the New York Area. 5. Excellent communication and administrative skills, including the ability to work independently and part of a team. 6. Excellent leadership, analytic, communication, and writing skills. 7. Valid New York State driver’s license.

Residency Requirement

Residency in New York City, Nassau, Orange, Rockland, Suffolk, Putnam or Westchester counties required for employees with over two years of city service. New York City residency required for all other candidates within 90 days of hire.
