Job summary

The YMCA of the Virginia Peninsulas is seeking a Wellness Coach to assist and coach members, maintain equipment, and support staff in delivering high quality service at our Hampton, VA facility.

Under supervision, you will welcome and engage members, lead wellness activities, and conduct orientations and evaluations while ensuring a safe and clean environment consistent with YMCA standards.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Requires minimum 6 months wellness field experience; Grade III threshold is 6 months, Grade IV requires 2 years fitness experience or 2 years college-level exercise science.
  • Must obtain YMCA Healthy Lifestyle Principles and Foundations within first 6 months.
  • CPR/First Aid/AED/O2 certification due within 60 days of hire.
  • Complete trainings: NEO, Bloodborne Pathogens, CAP, Sexual Harassment; pass background checks.

  • Conduct daily, weekly and monthly equipment checks; perform daily wellness area cleaning.
  • Submit maintenance requests via software.
  • Attend staff meetings and trainings.
  • Wear staff uniform and name tag; dress appropriately.
  • Lead in emergencies and report incidents per Emergency Communication Action Plan.
  • Follow Association standards.
  • Carry out related duties to ensure excellent member experience.

Job description

General Function:

Under the supervision of the designated supervisor, and in harmony with the mission and purpose of the established policies and goals of the YMCA of the Virginia Peninsulas, the Wellness Coach will maintain equipment and surrounding areas, and engage and coach members. With an emphasis on ensuring the highest quality service to members and guests, the Wellness Coach will work with all staff to welcome, connect, support, and engage all members, guests, and staff.


Qualifications:


  • Minimum of 18 years of age.

  • Must have a minimum of 6 months experience in the wellness field.

    • Grade III requirement: minimum of 6 months experience in the wellness field.

    • Grade IV requirement: minimum of 2 years in the fitness filed or up to 2 years college level exercise science.



  • Must obtain YMCA Healthy Lifestyle Principles and Foundations of Strength and Conditioning within first 6 months of employment.

  • Certification in CPR/First Aid/AED/O2 required within 60 days of hire

  • Complete and maintain required trainings to include: New Employee Orientation (NEO), Bloodborne Pathogens, Child Abuse Prevention (CAP), and Sexual Harassment, Satisfactory completion of a criminal background check and Child Protective Services check.


Essential Functions:


  • Support the mission, vision and goals of the YMCA.

  • Promote a professional values-based culture by leading with the values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.

  • Lead in a manner that advances our cause to strengthen the foundations of community through programs that focus on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.

  • Supervision of the wellness area.

  • Engage YMCA members through coaching on wellness activities.

  • Provides member training, orientations, and evaluations as scheduled.

  • Provides and documents daily, weekly and monthly equipment checks.

  • Performs daily cleaning in the wellness area and follow documentation procedures.

  • Input maintenance requests in association maintenance software.

  • Attend staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.

  • Wear staff uniform and name tag, or professional attire when appropriate.

  • Act as a leader in emergency situations. Report any accidents or incidents according to Emergency Communication Action Plan.

  • Follow Association standards.

  • Carry out other related duties as deemed necessary by the Wellness Department and center operations to ensure an excellent member experience.

Skills and Ability Requirements:


  • Ability to respond effectively to inquiries or complaints.

  • Ability to properly prepare, choreograph, teach all required classes.

  • Must be able to meet the physical aspects of the position, including walking, standing, bending, and reaching for extended periods.

  • Adequate ability to hear noises and distinguish distress signals.

  • Ability to communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in normal and loud situations.
