Job summary

Qualifications

• Active AWS CWI certification required.
• 3+ years welding/fabrication/inspection or production leadership in structural steel/heavy industry.
• Experience leading welders, fitters, team leads, or skilled-trade employees preferred.
• Working knowledge of AWS D1.1 and AWS D1.3, WPSs, welder qualifications, inspection requirements, and weld acceptance criteria.
• Strong knowledge of structural steel fabrication and welding processes (GMAW, FCAW, SMAW).
• Ability to read fabrication drawings, blueprints, weld symbols, specs, work orders, and schedules.
• Strong communication, coaching, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
• Balance production demands with safety, quality, and code compliance.
• Experience with robotic or automated welding equipment preferred.
• ERP systems, production reporting tools, and MS Office knowledge.
• OSHA-related safety training or credentials preferred.
• Lean Manufacturing: 5S, standardized work, visual management, waste reduction, root-cause analysis, continuous improvement.

Responsibilities

• Manage daily welding operations to meet production schedules and quality/cost targets.
• Coach and develop welding supervisors, team leads, welders, fitters, and operators.
• Prioritize work, allocate labor, monitor progress, and adjust staffing as needed.
• Ensure compliance with Welding Procedures, drawings, weld symbols, and AWS standards.
• Oversee visual weld inspections and acceptance criteria.
• Maintain welder qualifications, records, inspections, and certifications.
• Lead welder training to meet AWS guidelines and testing requirements.
• Collaborate with Quality on weld-related nonconformances and repairs.
• Lead root-cause investigations for weld defects and process variation.
• Ensure welding equipment, consumables, and gas supplies are available and maintained.
• Own department SQDC metrics and countermeasures.
• Lead Lean initiatives to reduce wastes and optimize flow (5S, setup reduction).
• Establish standardized welding sequences, parameters, consumable control, and setup activities.
• Drive continuous improvement to reduce downtime and rework, improve quality, and efficiency.
• Participate in safety, PPE adherence, and OSHA compliance.
