Job summary

Job description

About This Position

The City of Phoenix Public Works Department strives to improve the quality of life in Phoenix through the efficient delivery of outstanding solid waste, fleet, facilities, and energy management services. The Fleet Division of the Public Works Department is seeking a skilled Welder to fabricate, repair, and modify metal equipment and structures using acetylene, MIG, TIG, arc welding, and related tools. Work involves welding ferrous and non-ferrous metals, performing mechanical repairs on heavy‑duty equipment, and completing fabrication assignments from blueprints, sketches, or oral instructions. Welders work independently with discretion in methods and techniques, subject to quality and safety inspection.

Responsibilities Include
  • Welders perform skilled welding work in the fabrication and repair of metal equipment using (MIG, TIG, ARC) oxygen/acetylene processes.
  • Welding assignments may be accompanied by blueprints, sketches, and oral instructions.
  • This position requires the use of independent judgment in selecting the repair methods, equipment, and materials used to accomplishment assignments.
  • Welders use personal computers, related software, and automated control and electrical systems. Work may include performing mechanical repairs on heavy-duty equipment.
IDEAL CANDIDATE
The Ideal Candidate Has The Ability To
  • Weld and repair components on vehicles, pumps, trailers, playground equipment, airport equipment, storm grates, manholes, traffic poles, fire trucks, tanks, and facility structures.
  • Perform aluminum welding and rebuild heavy‑duty equipment.
  • Complete welding work in well fields, water treatment facilities, and wastewater systems to ensure watertight integrity.
  • Fabricate parts and structures from oral instructions or drawings.
  • Perform mechanical repairs on heavy‑duty automotive equipment.
  • Maintain written records of work completed and follow all safety procedures.
SALARY

Pay Range: $34.08 to $47.95 per hour.

Hiring Range: $34.08 to $37.58 per hour.

  • Hiring range is an estimate of where you can receive an offer. The actual salary offer will carefully consider a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, training, and internal equity.
  • Promotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade increase.
  • Demotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade decrease.
  • Lateral transfers occur when there is no change to the last two digits of the pay grade.
  • When there is a change in the first digit of the pay grade, there may also be a change to your classification or unit.

Minimum Qualifications
  • One year of experience as a skilled welder,
  • OR the completion of a recognized welding apprenticeship.
  • All finalists for positions are subject to a criminal background check applicable to the department or position.
  • Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.

Work And Environmental Conditions Requirements
  • Working irregular hours, shifts, weekends, holidays, and evenings may be required.
  • Moving objects weighing up to 50 pounds may be required.
  • Working in confined spaces and/or at heights greater than 10 feet may be required.
Preferred Qualifications

The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:

  • Completion of a recognized welding apprenticeship or certification from an approved welding trade school program.
Experience With
  • Working as a full-time skilled welder.
  • Observing or monitoring objects to determine compliance with prescribed operating or safety standards.
  • Visually inspecting welds to determine compliance with standards.
  • Reading/ interpreting blueprints and working drawings.
  • Welding aluminum and stainless steel.
  • Working with the use of acetylene and electronic welding equipment.
    • Metal Inert Gas (MIG) welding.
    • Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding.
    • Other standard tools, practices, and equipment related to the trade.
  • Working with :
    • Arc Welding procedures and equipment.
    • Ferrous and non-ferrous metals in relating to welding and brazing.
