Position Overview

MaineDOT is seeking to fill a Welder/Fabricator position at our 66 Industrial Drive, Augusta Headquarters facility. This position performs structure and craft work that involves welding and the fabrication, modification, maintenance, and repair of a variety of metal objects, fixtures, and industrial equipment associated with construction and snow removal related operations. Work involves the disassembly, design, assembly, repair, and maintenance of a variety of metal and nonmetal materials and equipment.

Duties include fabricating a variety of structures and implements, at times from blueprints and sketches, operating heavy vehicles and construction equipment, and providing oversight to others engaged in performing welding duties. This position also includes a significant amount of heavy equipment maintenance and repair work in addition to welding and fabrication responsibilities. Duties may include the disassembly and assembly of heavy equipment drive trains, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, implement repair, automotive, equipment, and implement paint, body repair, and refinishing work, particularly as it relates to heavy equipment and fleet operations.

Along with possession of welding/fabrication experience on heavy construction vehicles and equipment, knowledge and experience operating industrial shop equipment such as hydraulic brakes, shears, band saws, overhead cranes, presses, and related fabrication equipment as well as experience troubleshooting and repairing construction equipment and industrial machinery are strongly preferred.

Preference will also be given to individuals who possess experience with automotive paint, body repair, and refinishing work, particularly as it relates to heavy equipment and fleet operations.

Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities Required

• Knowledge of welding methods, practices, procedures, and technology associated with a variety of welders.
• Knowledge of metallurgical science.
• Knowledge of a variety of standard and electronic measuring tools and equipment.
• Knowledge of modern metal fabrication methods, techniques, and associated equipment, supplies, and tools.
• Knowledge of the occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions needed to perform metal fabrication, welding, and repair work.
• Ability to operate a variety of welding and metal fabrication equipment.
• Ability to conceptualize, design, and create drawings of specialized parts or products for ground proofing and certification (mark of reliance) by a licensed professional engineer.
• Ability to fabricate materials and perform welding work from plans, sketches, and oral or written instructions.
• Ability to read and comprehend technical handbooks.
• Ability to work in environmentally diverse conditions, confined spaces, perform positional welding, and use standard power, shop, and hand tools.
• Ability to obtain and retain required licenses and certifications.

Minimum Qualifications

• Two (2) years experience, education, and/or training in welding, metal fabrication, and/or related field which provides a basic knowledge of metallurgical science, blueprint interpretation, programing and operation of computer-controlled machines, welding techniques, and joining methods.

Licensing/Registration/Certification Requirements

• Must obtain a State of Maine Class B CDL with air endorsements and pass the MaineDOT Welder Certification as a condition of successfully completing probation.
• Under federal law, only U.S. Citizens, Permanent Residents, or H-2A, H-2B, or E-2 visa holders will be eligible for new or renewed CDLs.
