Position Description: Welder - Die Polisher

Employee has strong capabilities in various forms of welding, mold/die polishing skills, and quality inspection/evaluations of mold/die(s) from external supplier's workmanship. Responsible for blue print interpretation and be able to ensure a quality product. Is cost conscientious, schedule adherent, uses time efficiently, and is innovative.

Principle Accountabilities:

1. Responsibilities include welding, polishing, quality evaluation(s) from external suppliers, and in-process die inspections for a specialty tooling operation.


2. Highly skilled in TIG/MIG welding in addition to being capable of Laser welding to be able to coordinate with floor activities within your area on the shift. Work assignments are tied to the CNC machining operation to make sure schedules are met.


3. Capable of setting up welding machines based on the job at hand or using Standard Welding Procedure Specifications to insure size, density and depth of bond is appropriate for the assignment. No gas bubble inclusions nor excessive heat need to maintain uniform crystal structure of weld and base metal.


4. Proficiency in mathematics, computer 2D drafting, and general computing skills.


5. Responsible for communicating work status and assignments with prior/subsequent shift crew members to ensure a smooth transition of information and responsibilities.


6. Perform part inspection using micrometers, calipers, height indicator, etc.


7. Assist department management in providing materials and tooling inventories to meet production goals/schedules.


8. Maintain the certification of skills and training needs for welding and polishing using BJA's, OJT and safe work practices.

Challenges:

The challenge for this position is to get a successful weld density and uniform weld to base metal transition to minimize seeing the welded spot which will meet or exceed customer specifications. The welding work is not repetitive. Each mold/die assignment usually requires a different skill, welding rod, welding equipment or settings. Demand for welding dies varies so employee needs to have polishing skills, CNC machining skills or other work assignments to balance work week.

Knowledge and Experience:

• 10+ years' experience in a Machine shop in finishing and welding operations equipment


• 3-5 years' experience with various methods of welding (MIG-TIG-Stick-Laser)


• Proficient in the use of measuring equipment (+/- 0.002" tolerances) to inspect your own work


• Minimum high school degree


• Trade school desired

The minimum base salary for this position is $55,000 + bonus + benefits. base pay may increase depending on job related knowledge, skills and experience. The information is specific to the state of IL and may n ot be applicable to other areas.
