Job description

Position Description: Welder - Die Polisher

The employee should have strong capabilities in various forms of welding, mold/die polishing skills, and quality inspection/evaluations of mold/die(s) from external suppliers. Responsible for blueprint interpretation and ensuring a quality product. The employee should be cost-conscious, adhere to schedules, use time efficiently, and be innovative.

Principle Accountabilities:

  1. Responsibilities include welding, polishing, quality evaluations from external suppliers, and in-process die inspections for a specialty tooling operation.
  2. Highly skilled in TIG/MIG welding and capable of Laser welding to coordinate with floor activities within your area on the shift. Work assignments are tied to CNC machining operations to meet schedules.
  3. Capable of setting up welding machines based on the job or using Standard Welding Procedure Specifications to ensure appropriate size, density, and depth of bond. Maintain weld quality by avoiding gas bubble inclusions and excessive heat to preserve the crystal structure of weld and base metal.
  4. Proficiency in mathematics, computer 2D drafting, and general computing skills.
  5. Responsible for communicating work status and assignments with prior/subsequent shift crew members to ensure smooth transition of responsibilities.
  6. Perform part inspections using micrometers, calipers, height indicators, etc.
  7. Assist management in providing materials and tooling inventories to meet production goals.
  8. Maintain certification of skills and training needs for welding and polishing using BJA’s, OJT, and safe work practices.

Challenges:

The challenge is to achieve successful weld density and a uniform weld-to-base metal transition to meet or exceed customer specifications. Welding work is varied; each mold/die may require different skills, welding rods, equipment, or settings. Employee must also have polishing, CNC machining, or other skills to balance work throughout the week.

Knowledge and Experience:

  • 10+ years of experience in a machine shop with finishing and welding operations.
  • 3-5 years of experience with various welding methods (MIG, TIG, Stick, Laser).
  • Proficient in using measuring equipment (+/- 0.002” tolerances) to inspect own work.
  • Minimum high school diploma; trade school preferred.
  • Motivational and strong communication skills.

The minimum base salary for this position is $55,000 plus bonus and benefits. Pay may increase based on knowledge, skills, and experience.

The information is specific to Illinois and may not apply elsewhere.
