Job summary

Union Tank Car Company seeks 3rd Shift Welders to join our team in Valdosta, GA. You will weld components of tank cars, perform welded repairs, and operate various welding systems. The role emphasizes safety, teamwork, and adherence to procedures.

This position requires a high school diploma or GED, the ability to pass a welding test, and reliability for overtime. PPE must be worn at all times, and you will train apprentices as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Welds components of tank cars including tanks, bolsters, underframes, side sills, etc.
  • Performs welded repairs using air arc cutting torch and stick or wire welding equipment.
  • Uses hand tools to chip and grind welds and remove slag or spatter.
  • Repairs and reworks car parts using various hand and power tools.
  • Performs welding and mechanical repairs to tank and hopper cars as needed.
  • Maintains a neat and safe work area and reports hazards.

Primary Job Functions – below is a general description of the essential functions of this job.

This is not an exhaustive list and employees in these classifications frequently may be required to perform additional duties. Not all classifications will be required to perform all functions. The employee is responsible for the quality assurance requirements of each task performed.

  • Welds components related to tank cars including tanks, bolsters, underframes, side sills, etc.
  • Performs welded repairs by utilizing air arc cutting torch and stick or wire welding equipment.
  • Uses hand tools and equipment to chip and grind weld, slag or spatter.
  • Repairs, straightens, removes, reworks car parts, brakes, underframes, center plates, gears, couplers, valves, etc using various hand and power tools.
  • Performs welding and mechanical repairs to tank and hopper cars when required.
  • Maintains work area in a neat and orderly manner and reports potential hazards.
Knowledge and Skills Required
  • Have a high school diploma or GED
  • Must pass the applicable welding test as prescribed by the company.
  • Must be able to work effectively and efficiently both as a member of a team and independently.
  • Able to follow written and/or verbal instructions with minimal supervision.
  • Dependable and reliable to show up for scheduled work shifts including overtime.
  • Willingness to wear required PPE at all times and always work safely.
  • Ability to understand and follow UTLX operating procedures and policies based on safety and field training.
Working Conditions
  • Exposed to dirt, fumes, smoke, and heat.
  • Work outdoors and will be exposed to the elements.
  • Physical effort in lifting and carrying materials and attaching rigging devices.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds.
  • Moderate physical exertion is required.
  • Positions relatively heavy objects by using a forklift or other mechanical means.
  • Manual dexterity in operating control levers and buttons.
  • Some climbing into and out of vehicles, crane cabs, etc.
  • Some outside work possible minor cuts and bruises.
  • Must exercise caution in operation of equipment in confined areas.
  • Possible exposure to hazardous materials or hazardous waste from leaks or spills of these materials while moving or storing them.
