Job summary

Shelter House in Alexandria, VA is seeking a Cook for the Kennedy Emergency Shelter kitchen. The role prepares and serves nutritious meals for residents, ensuring daily operations run smoothly and in line with federal and state guidelines.

You will stock the refrigerator, monitor inventory, assist with food donations, supervise volunteers, and work Saturdays and Sundays from 10:30 AM to 6:30 PM. Prior commercial kitchen experience is required.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• 1+ years of experience cooking in a commercial kitchen.
• Ability to operate commercial kitchen equipment.
• Willingness to work mornings, evenings and weekends when needed.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and serve nutritional meals for each mealtime according to guidelines.
• Ensure adequate stocking of essential food items in refrigerators and self-serve areas.
• Check supply, assist with unloading deliveries and maintain inventories within budget.
• Clean kitchen and equipment to ensure sanitary conditions and health compliance.
• Accept and label all food donations from the community.
• Monitor and assist kitchen volunteers.
• Attend staff meetings and training as directed by supervisor.
• Model respectful attitude toward residents and uphold shelter procedures.
• Serve meals and accommodate dietary requests.
• Maintain knowledge of emergency safety procedures for kitchen and shelter.
• Proficiently use Microsoft and Google Suites in day-to-day work.
