Job summary

Western State Hospital in Virginia is seeking part-time Psychiatric Care Technicians (PCTs) to cover 8- or 12-hour shifts on weekends and 7 a.m.–7 p.m. or 7 p.m.–7 a.m., or 3 p.m.–11 p.m.

Part-time PCTs are required to work a minimum of 64 hours per month and four holiday hours. PCTs work under licensed nursing staff, providing recovery-oriented direct care in a hospital setting, maintaining a safe environment and supporting individualized treatment plans.

Qualifications

• Ability to provide direct psychiatric patient care under supervision of licensed staff.
• Ability to effectively communicate with staff and psychiatric patients.
• Ability to work in a secure environment with individuals experiencing acute symptoms.
• Follow instructions and report observations to licensed staff promptly.
• Demonstrate knowledge of recovery/trauma-informed care.
• Intervene appropriately in crisis or problem situations.
• Assist patients with activities of daily living.
• Willing to learn about developmental and psychiatric disorders and aging needs.
• Willing to learn basic treatment measures for adults, developmentally disabled or geriatric populations.
• Vision and hearing adequate to recognize hazards and ensure safety.
• Ability to work in a team
• Infection prevention and control practices
• Ability to perform physical tasks including lifting and restraining
• Overtime availability for staffing emergencies
• Complete TOVA III training with restraints
• Basic computer skills
• CNA certification in good standing with VA Board of Nursing

Responsibilities

• Provide recovery-oriented direct care in a hospital setting.
• Maintain a safe, clean, and therapeutic environment.
• Support patients to engage in individualized treatment plans.
• Deliver both individual and group treatment programs for patients with mental illness or co-occurring issues.
• Take vital signs and assist with ADLs, feeding, and personal care.
• Provide one-to-one direct observation and assist with meals and milieu management.
• Utilize de-escalation techniques to manage behavior and maintain safety.
• Collaborate with nurses and participate in the Learning Center activities to support recovery.
