Job summary

YWCA Northeast Kansas in Topeka seeks a Part-Time Shelter Advocate to provide crisis intervention and advocacy for survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, and human trafficking within our shelter and crisis hotline setting. Reporting to the Assistant Shelter Manager, you will help maintain a safe, confidential environment for clients.

Qualifications

• Understanding dynamics of domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, and human trafficking.
• Knowledge of local community resources and support services.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with crisis engagement ability.
• Valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and ability to travel within service areas.
• Commitment to YWCA mission and values including racial equity and social justice.

Responsibilities

• Offers information and/or crisis counseling to 800 number callers and referrals to local resources.
• Meets victims at the hospital for domestic violence or sexual assault support.
• Conducts initial shelter screen and intake for victims of domestic and/or sexual violence.
• Orients new shelter residents and completes necessary paperwork.
• Monitors residents in community living and enforces safety per policy.
• Assists in maintaining shelter cleanliness and operations, including laundry and kitchen tasks.
• Documents shift information and provides briefings to incoming staff.
• Completes weekly, bi-weekly, and monthly paperwork for supervisor.
• Attends monthly Shelter Staff Meetings.
