Web Developer (IT Associate, Level 2 Hourly) - Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY

GENERAL DUTIES

I.T. Associates perform moderately complex professional work in technology-related disciplines. While areas of specialization vary, typically I.T. Associates work in areas such as development/programming, communications, technical support, or similar functions depending on the needs of the Information Technology area to which they report. Work tasks include resolving complex technology problems and serving as a technical resource. They have considerable latitude for independent initiative and judgment and may have supervisory responsibilities.

I.T. Associates should demonstrate mastery of one or more technology-related disciplines.

The Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY, founded in 2006, has become nationally recognized for its innovative programs. It prepares students from diverse economic, racial, and cultural backgrounds to produce high-quality journalism.

As the profession continues to evolve in the digital age, the Newmark J-School remains focused on equipping the next generation of journalists with the reporting, writing, interactive, technological, and entrepreneurial skills they need to find stories and tell them effectively.

Reporting to the Director of Communications and Marketing, the part-time Web Developer is responsible for supporting the planning, development, maintenance, testing, and improvement of the school’s web services and digital properties. The incumbent works collaboratively with communications, marketing, and technology staff to ensure that web assets are effective, current, accessible, and aligned with institutional priorities.

This position requires the incumbent to work in person.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Supports the day-to-day planning, coordination, and maintenance of the school’s primary web assets and special projects.
  • Works cooperatively with the college community to develop strategic and tactical plans that facilitate and coordinate the delivery of web services.
  • Coordinates, develops, and implements project plans to support web initiatives and related digital communications needs.
  • Maintains open communication with communications, marketing, technology, and planning teams to ensure efficient processes and coordination across overlapping responsibilities.
  • Collaborates with designers, content editors, and technical staff on the design, development, testing, and deployment of web-based programs and information systems.
  • Researches, selects, implements, and maintains web-based applications integrated with a variety of data sources.
  • Develops and manages web development and support procedures, tools, and documentation, including scope documents, source code management, and technical support standards.
  • Participates in all phases of projects including development, design, testing, and production.
  • Tracks and tests new technologies and techniques and helps evaluate their suitability for the school’s web environment.
  • Ensures that application software, database software, and operating systems are maintained at current revision levels and that acceptable performance and access standards are met.
  • Assists in coordinating the ordering, receiving, and payment activities related to the acquisition of new technology and digital tools.
  • Participates in the monitoring of departmental budgets as related to web services and digital initiatives.
  • Serves as an advisor to school-wide committees and project groups, as needed, and helps coordinate information and activities.
  • Assists with planning, procedures, and activities that support business continuity and recovery when technical problems occur.
  • Stays current with technological developments and management practices through publications, professional learning, conferences, workshops, and collaboration with colleagues.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

This position requires the incumbent to work in-person.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  1. High School Diploma, G.E.D., or equivalent
  2. An equivalent of seven years of experience post-high school that can be met by one of the following: seven years of full-time work experience in a computer or technology related position; an Associate's degree plus five years of full-time work experience in a computer or technology-related position; a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution plus three years of full-time work experience in a computer or technology-related position
  3. Demonstrated English Language proficiency
  4. A Motor Vehicle Driver's license, valid in New York State, may be required for some, but not all positions.

This job has three levels. To qualify for Levels 2 and 3, additional qualifications, such as education, experience, or certification relevant to the area of specialization are required.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Manage complex projects and multiple priorities.
  • Communicate technical and complex information clearly, both verbally and in writing.
  • Analyze problems and develop practical solutions.
  • Carry out strategic planning activities in support of communications and marketing goals.
  • Availability to work occasional evenings and/or weekends.

Knowledge of the following is required:

  • Content Management Systems, including WordPress.
  • Effective web design, including HTML and CSS.
  • Web development technologies, including PHP, XML, JavaScript, and related tools.
  • Relational database management, including MySQL.
  • Graphic design principles.
  • Linux servers, including Ubuntu.
  • Version control, including GIT.
  • Application programming languages, including PHP and JavaScript.
  • Design and productivity software, including Photoshop and Microsoft Office.
COMPENSATION

$50.11/per hour

Part-time employees must meet a weekly or semester work hour criteria to be eligible for health benefits. Health benefits are also extended to retirees who meet the eligibility criteria.
