Job Description:

The Waterfront Program Director/STEM Outreach Coordinator will enhance participation in SUNY Maritime College's degree, professional, and community programs, focusing on underrepresented groups including minorities and females. The role aims to engage youth and expose them to maritime industry opportunities, potentially launching successful maritime careers.

This position reports to the Waterfront Director and collaborates with department chairs, faculty, students, and program directors across Admissions, Community Programs, Aquatics, Athletics, and Housing. Responsibilities include promoting existing programs such as Maritime Adventure Splash, Boat Camp, STEM Days, Powerboat classes, and high school sailing, as well as developing new initiatives like STEM After School Programs and school field trips.

Responsibilities:

  • Waterfront/STEM Program Management (50%)
  • Manage community programs, including scheduling and promotion of courses like Maritime Adventure Boat and Splash Camp, boating safety classes, sailing, instructor courses, and STEM programs.
  • Support student activities, including intercollegiate sports (sailing and rowing), intramural and recreational activities (SUP, kayaks, fiberglass or small engine repair classes), and academic support utilizing the Waterfront.
  • Oversee daily Waterfront operations, including athletics, academic departments, student activities, hosting regattas, and community programs like summer camps and clinics.
  • Coordinate and market public programs, especially STEM initiatives, targeting the general public, local schools, and organizations, with a focus on underserved populations in NYC.
  • Manage and train personnel such as instructors, student assistants, summer staff, and volunteers.
  • Maintain an active presence on traditional and social media with the College’s Communications office.
  • Strategic Outreach (30%)
  • Develop new initiatives like STEM After School Programs and school field trips, integrating them into maritime education pathways, with an emphasis on disadvantaged youth.
  • Build and strengthen partnerships with schools, organizations, and employers to support educational and employment pathways in maritime careers.
  • Support (20%)
  • Supervise safety and operational policies for the Waterfront.
  • Assist in program execution and special events.
  • Ensure facilities and equipment are maintained to support current and future goals.
  • Assist in securing financial support through grants, donations, sponsorships, and program fees from industry, foundations, government, and individuals.
  • Support colleagues and perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in education, youth development, or STEM-related field.
  • 1-3 years experience managing and evaluating educational and community programs.
  • Enthusiastic, organized, outgoing, and willing to learn and improve.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Supervisory or managerial experience in educational, recreational, or waterfront programs.
  • 3-5 years experience teaching middle/high school or vocational training, with a focus on STEM, career prep, or youth development.
  • Fundraising ability, including grant writing.
  • Competitive sailing experience at collegiate level or higher, with coaching/instruction credentials such as US Sailing Level I, II, or III, or certifications like Basic Keelboat, Cruising, Bareboat, or Powerboat Instructor.

Additional Information:

This is a UUP position with an anticipated salary of $70,000 to $85,000, complemented by an excellent benefits package. Salary will be commensurate with experience. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled.

Notes: This is a FLSA exempt position, not eligible for overtime. Internal and external applications will be considered simultaneously.
