Waterfront Program Director/STEM Outreach Coordinator

SUNY Maritime College, situated on a scenic 55-acre waterfront on the Throggs Neck peninsula near New York City, offers a unique blend of a college-town atmosphere and proximity to Manhattan. The college provides diverse employment opportunities that promote growth and development.

Job Description:

The Waterfront Program Director/STEM Outreach Coordinator will focus on increasing participation in college programs, especially targeting underrepresented groups such as minorities and females. The role involves engaging youth and exposing them to maritime industry opportunities, aiming to launch successful maritime careers.

This position reports to the Waterfront Director and collaborates with department chairs, faculty, students, and program directors across various college units to enhance and promote existing programs like Maritime Adventure Splash, Boat Camp, STEM Days, Powerboat classes, and high school sailing, while also developing new initiatives such as STEM After School Programs and school field trips.

Responsibilities:

  1. Waterfront/STEM Program Management (50%)
  • Manage community programs including scheduling and promotion of courses like Maritime Adventure Boat, Splash Camp, boating safety classes, sailing, instructor courses, and STEM programs.
  • Support student activities including intercollegiate sports, intramural/recreational activities, and academic support utilizing the Waterfront facilities.
  • Oversee daily Waterfront operations, including athletics, academic departments, student activities, and community programs like summer camps and clinics.
  • Coordinate and market public programs, emphasizing STEM initiatives to the public, local schools, and underserved populations in NYC.
  • Manage and train personnel involved in Waterfront programs, including instructors, students, and volunteers.
  • Maintain an active social media presence in collaboration with the College's Communications office.
  1. Strategic Outreach (30%)
  • Develop new initiatives like STEM After School Programs and school field trips, focusing on disadvantaged youth.
  • Strengthen relationships with feeder schools and organizations to meet their needs.
  • Build partnerships with organizations, schools, and employers to create educational and employment pathways in maritime careers for youth, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds.
  1. Support (20%)
  • Supervise safety and operational policies for the Waterfront.
  • Assist with program execution and special events as needed.
  • Ensure proper maintenance of facilities and equipment.
  • Collaborate with Institutional Advancement to secure funding through grants, donations, and sponsorships to grow maritime programs.
  • Support colleagues and perform other duties as assigned.

Compensation: $70,000 - $85,000 annually.
