Job summary

American States Water Company is seeking a maintenance technician to support water and wastewater systems on military installations. You will perform inspections, testing, and certifications of mains, meters, hydrants, and sewer assets, and operate related equipment on-site in Maryland and other states.

The role emphasizes safety, customer communications, and the ability to read technical documents while maintaining records and supporting emergency responses.

Qualifications

• Must possess knowledge and comprehension of safety practices for general construction and handling of all materials used in water and wastewater system operations, to include liquids, chemicals, hazardous solids, confined spaces, electrical safety.
• Ascertains general knowledge of water and wastewater system operations, control settings, and plant/lift station operations.
• Communication skills including fluency reading, writing, and speaking English.
• Basic math skills required.
• Must possess strong customer service skills.
• Must be able to effectively communicate with customers to resolve issues professionally.
• Microsoft Office skills preferred.

Responsibilities

• Under close supervision, performs activities related to water and wastewater system maintenance, including water quality and water supply.
• Inspects, installs, repairs, replaces, tests and certifies water mains, water services, water meters, hydrants, backflow devices and related assets.
• Inspects, installs, repairs, replaces sewer lines, laterals, manholes, collection mains; uses video equipment to identify deficiencies.
• Inspects lift stations; ensures SCADA alarms work; visually inspects wet wells and pump cycling.
• Responds to service orders; marks water and wastewater infrastructure near pump stations and generators.
• Performs customer support; interacts with the public professionally.
• Notifies customers of outages.
• Reads and interprets technical documents, maps, specs.
• Reads meters manually or with automated equipment.
• Responds quickly to service requests.
• Operates heavy machinery as needed for maintenance tasks.
• Performs basic preventive maintenance on heavy equipment.
• May analyze pump operation and monitor water and wastewater operations.
• May execute System Flushing, Cross-connection, Spill Response, and Preventative Maintenance programs.
• Completes work orders, forms, and records.
• May operate leak detection equipment and analyze data.
• May perform routine sampling of water and wastewater.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
