Job summary

EPS Group in Mesa, AZ seeks an experienced Senior Project Engineer to lead project teams, manage client relations, and oversee budgets and schedule adherence. The role requires driving contract development, proposals, and interviews for new work.

You will mentor engineers, coordinate with design partners, and ensure compliance with industry standards while maintaining effective communication with stakeholders. This exempt, full-time role emphasizes leadership and delivery.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in civil, environmental, or related engineering field is required.
  • Professional Engineering License is required or in process.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and oversee all team activities including production documents, client management, and project financials.
  • Develop project timelines with milestones and a defined workflow.
  • Prepare contracts and proposals with scope, schedules and fees for client review.
  • Lead kickoff and closeout meetings and coordinate with internal and external design partners.
  • Serve as primary client contact to ensure the design meets goals and requirements.
  • Monitor project health including budgets, billings, schedules, and progress; resolve issues and coordinate activities.
  • delegate tasks with clear deadlines and expectations to team members.
  • Collaborate with external project teams to achieve project goals.
  • Manage invoice processing including change orders and additional services.
  • Coordinate permit submittals and engage with reviewing authorities.
  • Provide QA/QC and guidance on engineering issues and best practices.
  • Oversee resource management for the project team and scale staffing.
  • Mentor staff and conduct regular performance reviews.

Job description

Reports To: Senior Project Manager

Status: Full-time, Exempt

Core Responsibilities
  • Manage, lead, and oversee all team activities, including production documents, client management, internal team management, and project financials.
  • Develop project timelines, including phases, completion dates, and milestones, and establish workflow and project plan.
  • Responsible for preparing contracts and proposals, including establishing the scope of work, schedules, and fees. Prepare and submit proposals to clients after SPM review. Participate in new project interviews.
  • Lead project kickoff and closeout meetings and lead project coordination meetings with internal team members and external design partners.
  • Serve as the primary client contact to understand goals, ensure the design meets their needs and specifications, and represent the client in public meetings.
  • Monitor project health by reviewing project plans, design, budgets, billings, schedule, and progress, resolve problems, and coordinate all project activities. Course correct with team members to make sure project objectives are met (including other departments and sub-consultants).
  • Delegate project tasks to team members promptly, provide clear direction on tasks and expectations on deliverables, and establish clear deadlines with team member affirmation.
  • Consult collaboratively with the external project team to achieve project goals.
  • Responsible for invoice management, including change orders and additional services.
  • Responsible for managing permit submittal processes and coordination with review authorities. Ability to determine these requirements quickly as project locations vary.
  • Provide quality assurance and control. Provide direction to technical staff on project issues and general engineering principles.
  • Responsible for resource management for the project team.
  • Oversee the Technical engineering components of the project.
  • Increase the team's overall effectiveness by developing staff, aligning individual team member strengths with appropriate project tasks, identifying potential obstacles (both internal and external), and performing reviews.
  • Balance staffing and workload through collaboration with the team and SPM
  • Monitor the work of team members to ensure that they adhere to industry standards and best practices.
  • Participate in new hire interviews and staffing selection.
  • Conduct regular 1:1’s with staff and performance reviews in alignment with the performance management cycle.
  • Initiate lunch and learn for sharing new technology or best practices.
  • Mentor team members across engineering.
  • Responsible for completing personal timecards accurately and reviewing and approving associate timecards on time.
  • Actively involved in developing future business and building relationships with existing clients, 25% of projects should be new business and 75% of projects should be assigned projects or repeat clients.
  • Communicate effectively (written and verbal) internally (interdepartmental and intradepartmental) and externally (inclusive of clients, sub-consultants, municipalities).
  • Participate in the execution of strategic initiatives.
  • Evaluate company practices and processes to provide input for continuous improvement.
  • Be an ambassador for EPS at industry events and conferences. May require attending project team and public meetings after hours.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Achieve a 60-70% Billable Utilization Rate. Non-billable activities include company & team meetings, professional development, community involvement, innovation time, culture & engagement activities, learning, and training.
  • Manage $500k-$1.8M in projects and up to 4-8 staff members.
Preferred Skills & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in civil, Environmental, or related Engineering field.
  • Professional Engineering License.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience with land development projects with a proven record of success as a project engineer and solid technical background.
  • Professional knowledge of Microsoft Office, Civil 3D, Bluebeam, and Pipe Networks.
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills and a high level of emotional intelligence with the ability to interface both in person and remotely (videoconferencing, phone, etc.).
  • Must demonstrate the ability to closely monitor project progress from a financial and schedule front with an eye for identifying scope creep elements.
  • Promote a positive teamwork environment, and lead and motivate a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong understanding of civil engineering design processes, plan set preparation, and obtaining agency approvals.
  • Exceptional organization skills and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to work accurately, follow procedures and schedules, and prioritize multiple tasks for highly technically capable individuals in a complex matrix environment.
  • Effectively delegates tasks (production and administrative) to allow for an increased focus on management tasks.
  • Valid driver's license and automobile insurance.
Physical Requirements
  • Required to stand, walk, and sit.
  • The position may require a visit to project sites occasionally.
  • The position requires a normal range of hearing.The employee must be able to lift 40 lbs. occasionally.
  • Requires prolonged sitting with 15% of the time spent bending and reaching.
  • Must have manual dexterity sufficient to operate a computer keyboard and calculator.
  • Noise levels are consistent with a standard office environment.
