Job description

Join Our Team as a Water/Wastewater Operator I

Join the City of Fair Oaks Ranch as a Full-Time Water/Wastewater Operator I and put your skills and experience to work supporting the essential water and wastewater systems our community relies on every day. This onsite position offers an exciting opportunity to perform meaningful, hands-on work while helping maintain safe, reliable, and efficient utility services.

With a starting annual salary of $48,468.00, you will be rewarded for your technical knowledge, reliability, and commitment to public service. The City offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes Medical, Dental, Vision, Life Insurance, a Flexible Spending Account, Paid Time Off, and participation in the Texas Municipal Retirement System, with a 7% mandatory employee contribution and a 2:1 City match.

This is an excellent opportunity for a licensed operator who values safety, integrity, teamwork, and service to the community.

City of Fair Oaks Ranch: Our Mission

The City of Fair Oaks Ranch is a vibrant Hill Country community located just northwest of San Antonio, combining small-town charm with convenient access to urban amenities. We take pride in providing exceptional public service, practicing fiscal responsibility, and preserving the natural beauty and unique character of our city.

As an employer, we foster a collaborative and professional work environment where innovation, integrity, and excellent service are valued. Join our dedicated team and become part of a community that values both its people and its progress.

What's Your Day Like?

As a Water/Wastewater Operator I, no two days will be exactly the same. You will help operate, inspect, maintain, and repair the City's water supply, treatment and distribution systems, as well as its wastewater treatment and collection facilities.

Your responsibilities may include inspecting and repairing wells, reservoirs, pumping stations, meters, chlorination systems, wastewater pump stations, gauges, pumps, filters, valves, and other treatment equipment. You will monitor system performance, take meter readings, maintain operational records, assist with treatment processes, and help ensure that equipment and facilities function safely and effectively.

You may also install and repair water mains, service connections, valves, hydrants, pipes, and fittings. Additional duties may include pavement cutting, ditch digging, line cleaning, backfilling, grounds maintenance, cleaning wet wells and treatment basins, monitoring electrical systems, and assisting with inventory control.

The position involves operating trucks, backhoes, loaders, skid steers, compactors, pumps, compressors, generators, and other construction and power equipment. Because utility emergencies do not always occur during regular working hours, you will also participate in a rotational on-call schedule.

Most work is performed outdoors or in the field under varying weather conditions. Safety, sound judgment, attention to detail, and dependable service are essential every day.

Are You the Water/Wastewater Operator I We're Looking For?

The ideal candidate is a dependable and safety-conscious licensed operator who is comfortable working in a physically active field environment. You should be able to identify and troubleshoot operational issues, follow applicable safety and industry standards, and work effectively as part of a crew.

Strong mechanical aptitude, basic mathematical skills, and experience with maintenance, construction, repair, and treatment equipment will help you succeed in this position. Effective communication skills are also important, as you will work closely with coworkers, other departments, and members of the public.

Minimum qualifications include:
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Two years of experience related to construction, maintenance, or repair
  • Current TCEQ Class C Groundwater Operator License or Class C Wastewater Treatment Operator License
  • Valid Texas Class C Driver's License
  • Ability to obtain a valid Texas Class A Commercial Driver's License within six months of employment
  • Ability to safely perform physically demanding fieldwork for extended periods
  • Ability to work around mechanical, electrical, chemical, confined-space, and other utility-related hazards
  • Ability to use common hand tools, power tools, motorized vehicles, and construction equipment
