Job summary

City of Elmhurst is seeking a Water/Wastewater Operations Manager to lead production and treatment facilities, ensuring regulatory compliance, asset management, safety, and efficient operations.

This senior role coordinates with internal teams, vendors, consultants, and regulatory agencies; oversees preventive maintenance, reporting, and emergencies; guides staff and contractors toward optimal performance.

Qualifications

• Two years college-level coursework in biology, engineering, or a related field, and four years journey-level water/wastewater experience.
• Illinois Class B driver’s license.
• IEPA Class C Water Plant Operator certification preferred at time of hire or within three years of start date.
• IEPA Class I wastewater treatment plant operator license preferred at time of hire or within three years of start date.

Responsibilities

• Oversee asset management and maintenance planning for water and wastewater facilities.
• Monitor and review jobs in progress, providing direction and technical assistance.
• Coordinate tasks, schedules, and contractor alignment with project timelines.
• Utilize asset data to analyze, maintain, and improve the Preventive Maintenance Program.
• Collaborate with agencies, residents, and customers on facility issues.
• Establish work standards and assist with employee evaluations.
• Monitor operations and respond to emergencies to minimize service disruptions.
• Inspect plant, lift stations and operations for safety and compliance.
• Provide oversight for sampling, reporting, and testing for regulatory compliance.
• Coordinate safety training and ensure proper procedures are followed.
• Prepare accurate regulatory reports and bid documents.
• Recommend purchases and track inventory of supplies and parts.
• Enhance team efficiency and customer service as a team member.
• Maintain courteous interactions with the public and staff.
