Job summary

Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) seeks a Water Treatment Plant Operator, Supervisor to lead daily operations at a Level 4 facility and ensure the delivery of safe drinking water to Seattle and region. The role directs operators, sets priorities, reviews regulatory reports, and mentors staff for a safe, efficient workplace.

You will apply advanced technical knowledge in water treatment, chemistry, and biology to troubleshoot, optimize performance, and maintain records.

Qualifications

• Five years of experience working for a water utility, including three years in a Class 3+ water treatment plant.
• Washington State Department of Health Level 4 Water Treatment Plant Operator certification or an equivalent from another state; must attain WA DOH Level 4 within six months if transferring.
• Ability to coach and motivate employees, mentor staff, and lead teams.
• Strong understanding of drinking water regulations and public health principles.

Responsibilities

• Lead and supervise operators at a Level 4 water treatment plant.
• Review and sign regulatory reports and maintain accurate operational records.
• Provide clear guidance during routine operations and emergencies.
• Operate computers and water treatment software to monitor equipment and input/output data.
• Support safety, training, and performance improvements across the plant.
