This position involves performing skilled technical duties and manual work in the operation and maintenance of the City of Golden's 12 MGD Water Treatment Plant (WTP). Responsibilities include water production, treatment, storage operations, and ensuring compliance with the Safe Drinking Water Act and City safety standards.
Must be able to work shiftwork, including days, nights, holidays, and weekends as assigned. Must be available for emergency response and on a rotating On-Call schedule.
Salary Range: DOQ based on level of Certification.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Conduct routine water plant rounds, observe operations, and perform duties related to water treatment and plant maintenance. Identify issues in equipment and treatment processes through inspection.
- Start up and shut down water treatment plant systems following operational protocols.
- Monitor and control plant operations using SCADA and manual methods, including reading gauges, meters, and instrumentation, and analyzing lab results.
- Adjust plant operations to meet changing needs, including controlling pumps, water flows, and chemical feed systems.
- Maintain detailed operational records, test logs, and reports for regulatory and internal use.
- Perform and interpret lab tests to monitor water quality parameters such as turbidity, alkalinity, chlorine residual, pH, and taste & odor, and adjust processes accordingly.
- Use problem-solving skills to deal with variables in complex situations.
- Manage chemical supplies, oversee deliveries, and ensure safety protocols are followed.
- Perform maintenance tasks such as cleaning tanks, inspecting plant structures, and calibrating instrumentation.
- Coordinate with other divisions to ensure regulatory compliance and water quality.
- Support safety, training, and emergency response activities, including maintaining certifications and participating in capital projects.
- Document activities in asset management software and support sustainability initiatives.
- Perform other duties as assigned, including tours and emergency operations.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED; Colorado Water Operator Certification required. An associate’s degree in water technology or related field is preferred.
- Class A, B, C, or D Colorado Water Operator License depending on the level, with respective experience requirements.
- Valid Colorado driver’s license and good driving record.
- Basic computer skills; familiarity with SCADA/HMI systems is a plus.
Skills and Abilities:
- Strong knowledge of chemistry, biology, hydraulics, and plumbing principles.
- Ability to interpret lab data, perform calculations, and make water quality decisions.
- Good communication, problem-solving, and team skills.
- Physical ability to perform demanding tasks, including lifting up to 50 pounds, working in various environmental conditions, and wearing PPE.
