Job summary

City of Monroe, North Carolina seeks a semiskilled worker to assist in operating its water treatment plant under the supervision of the Chief Water Treatment Plant Operator. The role includes taking samples, performing routine tests, maintaining records, and assisting with chemical handling and plant maintenance.

Ideal candidates will have a high school diploma or equivalent, a Grade C Surface Water Treatment certification, and a valid NC driver’s license.

Qualifications

• Graduation from high school or equivalent with on-the-job and formal instruction in water treatment plant operations.
• Possession of a Grade C Surface Water Treatment certification.
• Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license.

Responsibilities

• Assist in operating the water treatment plant.
• Take samples and perform routine tests.
• Ensure proper plant operation and maintain records and files.
• Prepare reports and maintain logs.
• Inspect plant and equipment and advise on corrective actions.
• Replace chlorine cylinders and regulate chlorine flow.
• Read meters, gauges and dials and log readings.
• Backwash filters and handle bulk chemicals.
• Participate in training to attain Class II operator certification.
• Perform plant maintenance, chemical handling, and housekeeping duties.
• Perform basic laboratory tests.
• Assist with unloading, storage, and dumping of bulk chemicals.
• Maintain records and prepare reports.
• Perform related tasks as required.
• Some knowledge of water treatment plant principles and operating practices.
• Ability to detect flaws in equipment operation and remedial measures.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent with water treatment training

Grade C Surface Water Treatment certification

Valid North Carolina driver's license

Reading meters and gauges

Record keeping and report preparation

Basic laboratory testing

Ability to work under supervision
