Job summary

Abilene Zoological Gardens seeks an entry-level Treatment Plant Operator Trainee to learn operating a Surface Water Treatment plant. You will perform chemical dosing calculations, laboratory tests, records, and SCADA monitoring to ensure potable water compliance under Texas and federal rules.

As you progress to Operator I/II/III, you’ll gain responsibility for controlling treatments, maintaining equipment, and reporting on plant performance, while adhering to safety and regulatory standards.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Acquire a C Surface Water License within 18 months; D license within 90 days of employment.
• Valid Texas driver’s license required or ability to obtain within 90 days.

Responsibilities

• Operate a City vehicle to travel to water treatment plants and related sites.
• Learn to calculate chemical dosages and adjust feeders for safe water treatment.
• Perform and record laboratory tests (pH, alkalinity, turbidity, chlorine, hardness, temp, conductivity).
• Backwash filters and maintain plant and laboratory operations; keep logs and inventories.
• Monitor SCADA systems and maintain data in computer systems.
