Job summary

Northfield Public Schools' Community Education program seeks a Water Safety Instructor (WSI) to support learning plans and safety for youth in Northfield, MN. This is a part-time, temporary position from 9/01/2026 to 5/31/2027, located at the Community Education Center.

Responsibilities

• WSIs will attend staff trainings in June and possibly additional trainings.
• WSIs will lead the administration of established curriculum.
• WSIs will oversee program leads and assistants and coach quality of staff with support from recreation coordinator and site supervisor.
• WSIs will oversee child behavior and implement the disciplinary action plan as needed.
• WSIs will arrive early, execute the daily plan, engage 100% with participants, teach general disciplines of activities, enhance skill development, build relationships with youth, and communicate with parents/guardians as needed.
• WSIs will show enthusiasm and create fun, positive experiences through words, actions, and non-verbal cues.
• WSIs will keep track of time worked and record on timesheet.
• WSIs will communicate with recreation coordinator regarding vacation requests and program issues in a timely manner.
• WSIs may be required to work up to two Saturday swim lessons, or two evening swim lessons.

-WSI's will attend staff training on the evening of June 3rd, and will attend one to two further trainings throughout the summer.

-WSI's will lead the administration of established curriculum.

-WSI's will oversee program leads and assistants in all classes running, and are responsible for the coaching effectiveness of staff and the quality of the program, with help of recreation coordinator and site supervisor.

-WSI's will oversee child behavior, and implement the disciplinary action plan as needed.

-WSI's will arrive early, know and fully execute the plan for each day, engage 100% throughout the program, teach general disciplines of each activity, enhance skill development, build relationships with youth, and communicate as needed with parents/guardians.

-WSI's will show enthusiasm and create fun, positive experiences through words, actions, and non-verbal's.

-WSI's will keep track of time worked and record on timesheet.

-WSI's will openly communicate with the recreation coordinator, in a timely manner, regarding vacation requests, program issues, etc.

- WSI's will be required to work up to two Saturday swim lessons, or two evening swim lessons.
