Job summary

Jobtailor is seeking a senior water resources engineer to lead flood risk management and coastal resilience projects across multiple jurisdictions. The role involves developing 1D/2D models, assessing stormwater systems, and guiding design through permitting.

You will collaborate with internal teams, subcontractors, and government agencies to deliver technically sound solutions. The ideal candidate has PE licensure within six months, a background in FEMA floodplain regulations, and experience

Responsibilities

Prepare analyses, plans, specs, and cost estimates for flood risk, coastal resilience, stormwater and drainage projects.
Develop hydrologic, hydraulic, and hydrodynamic models (1D/2D riverine, urban drainage, coastal systems).
Perform numerical modeling to evaluate flood risk, system capacity, and mitigation options.
Support analyses of storm surge, tidal flooding, rainfall-driven flooding, and sea level rise.
Coordinate with project teams, subcontractors, and agencies and prepare memoranda and reports.
Engage stakeholders across municipal, state and federal agencies.

Job description

Prepare engineering analyses, plans, specifications, and cost estimates for flood risk management, coastal resilience, stormwater, and drainage infrastructure projects
Develop and apply hydrologic, hydraulic, and hydrodynamic models, including 1D/2D riverine, urban drainage, interior basin, and coastal/tidal systems
Perform numerical modeling and engineering calculations to evaluate flood risk, system capacity, pump and outfall performance, and mitigation alternatives under existing and future conditions
Support analyses of storm surge, tidal flooding, rainfall-driven flooding, and sea level rise
Evaluate phased and adaptive implementation approaches
Prepare technical memoranda, reports, exhibits, figures, and presentation materials
Participate in technical coordination with project team members, internal disciplines, subcontractors, and government agencies
Support stakeholder engagement activities involving municipal, state, and federal agencies
Coordinate with regulatory requirements related to floodplain management and coastal permitting
Contribute to technical decision-making on feasibility, alternatives evaluation, cost considerations, and constructability
Coordinate task-level work and collaborate across offices to support project delivery and workshare execution
Work on projects ranging from federal flood risk management projects to municipal stormwater master plans and resilience plans
Collaborate with coastal engineering experts and Waggonner & Ball on regional resilience strategies and nature-based approaches
Support growth of the Charleston office and expansion across the Southeast, with some travel for project delivery

Requirements

Bachelor's Degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering
Master's Degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering preferred
5 to 10 years of experience related to water resources / stormwater management projects
Professional Engineering (PE) license required within 6 months of hire
Certified Floodplain Manager (CFM) Certificate preferred
Background and/or experience with floodplain mapping and floodplain management
Knowledge of FEMA Floodplain Regulations and Standards
Experience with stormwater hydrology and hydraulic modeling, stormwater and drainage infrastructure permitting and design
Experience with watershed assessment and planning
Experience with urban flood risk and floodplain management
Experience with flood protection and resilience
Experience with low impact development/green infrastructure
Experience preparing project scope and fee proposals
Knowledge of construction principles, including survey, inspection, and engineering methods and materials
Knowledge of surveying methods and techniques
Working knowledge of AutoCAD Civil 3D
Working knowledge of HEC-RAS and HEC-HMS
Working knowledge of SWMM/XPSWMM/PCSWMM
Working knowledge of InfoWorks ICM
Working knowledge of ESRI GIS
Python/MATLAB/coding for GIS and modeling preferred
Must successfully complete and pass a pre-employment background check in compliance with NIST 800-171
Must have the legal ability to obtain employment in the U.S. and present required documentation at hire
Ability to use standard office equipment
Ability to navigate unpaved or natural terrain while carrying equipment during some site visits
Light regional travel required
