Job summary

Biohabitats seeks an ecologically focused Water Resources Engineer to join our Northeast Highlands & Coastal Bioregion in Middletown, CT. You will contribute to planning, design, and construction drawings for wetland restoration, climate resilience, and living shorelines, collaborating with scientists, landscape architects, and engineers.

Prerequisites include 6–10 years of relevant experience, a 4-year degree (PE preferred or to obtain licensure within six months), and proficiency in AutoCAD,

Qualifications

  • Applied design experience related to stormwater management and restoration projects.
  • Understanding and applied experience supporting design projects from concept to construction drawings.
  • Proficient in the use of AutoCAD and Microsoft 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Knowledge and experience using hydrologic and hydraulic modeling programs (e.g., TR-55/TR-20, HEC-RAS, SWMM, Delft3D, MIKE21).
  • Restoration construction oversight experience.
  • Ability to support or lead field assessments under various weather and site conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Provide construction phase services (bid support, site observation).

Description

Biohabitats is seeking an ecologically focused Water Resources Engineer to join our Northeast Highlands & Coastal Bioregion team in Middletown, CT.

The ideal candidate will have strong organizational, analytical, and engineering skills that can be applied to support a variety of projects including planning studies, in-field assessments, and the preparation of design plans and construction documents. The successful candidate will work with our multidisciplinary team of scientists, landscape architects, and engineers to support ecological restoration, conservation, climate adaptation, and resiliency work for government, private, and non-governmental organizations.

Role and Responsibilities
  • Supporting a range of planning, design, and design-build projects (e.g., wetland restoration (coastal and inland), climate resilience and adaptation, living shorelines, green infrastructure and stormwater management, floodplain and river restoration, dam removal, and fish passage).
  • Preparing design drawings, construction documents, specifications, and cost estimates.
  • Providing construction phase services (e.g., bid support, construction observation).
  • Performing hydrologic and hydraulic modeling.
  • Conducting natural resources and watershed inventories and field assessments.
  • Supporting Northeast Highlands and Coastal Bioregion business development activities, including proposal writing.
Required Skills, Experience, and Knowledge
  • Applied design experience related to stormwater management and coastal, river, stream, floodplain, and/or wetland restoration projects.
  • Understanding and applied experience supporting aspects of design projects from concept through construction drawings and implementation.
  • Proficient in the use of AutoCAD and Microsoft 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
  • Knowledge and applied experience using hydrologic and hydraulic modeling programs for design projects (e.g., TR-55/TR-20, HEC-RAS, SWMM, HydroCAD, Delft3D, MIKE21).
  • Restoration construction oversight experience.
  • Ability to support or lead field assessments under a variety of weather and site conditions.
  • Ability to self-manage and work both independently and in a collaborative, team environment.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel throughout the Northeast and Hudson River region.
Preferred Skills, Experience, and Knowledge
  • Knowledge of New England or Northeastern ecosystems.
  • Applied design experience related to dam removal.
  • Geomorphic assessment knowledge and experience.
  • Topographic and/or bathymetric survey knowledge and experience.
  • Experience developing proposal scopes of work.
  • Knowledge of federal and state (CT, RI, and MA) regulatory permitting and coordination.
  • Proficiency in ArcGIS.
Education

Bachelor’s or master’s degree in relevant engineering field (e.g., Civil, Environmental, Ecological, Biosystems)

Years of Relevant Experience

6 – 10 years of relevant experience as a Water Resources Engineer with a preference for ecological restoration experience

Professional Registration

PE or ability to obtain licensure within six months of hire date.

Salary Range

$95,000 - $110,000, commensurate with experience

Biohabitats provides a flexible, hybrid work environment. During the onboarding period, new team members are expected to spend several days each week in our Middleton office. They can then transition to at least two office days per week, with flexibility to adjust based on field work and travel.
