Job description

Under the guidance of the Water Production Supervisor and/or their designated representative, performs routine duties to maintain the City’s potable water system. Coordinates regulatory sampling with outside agencies as needed. Inspects and maintains potable and non-potable water facilities, including chlorination systems. Investigates water quality concerns within the distribution system. Maintains records and submits sampling data for regulatory reporting. Responds to emergencies as an essential personnel, including during disasters or emergencies as directed by the Director of Public Works.

Responsibilities include:

  1. Collecting bacteriological and other water quality samples, ensuring sample integrity and safe delivery to laboratories.
  2. Completing chain of custody and maintaining records per regulatory standards.
  3. Investigating customer complaints and water quality concerns.
  4. Monitoring chlorine residuals and adjusting feed rates to maintain target levels.
  5. Performing daily inspections of water production stations, pressure stations, and storage tanks.
  6. Maintaining and repairing water facilities, including janitorial and lawn care duties.
  7. Monitoring well performance through sounding, airline tests, and sampling.
  8. Coordinating with external agencies for sampling and monitoring events.
  9. Diagnosing and repairing malfunctioning devices and updating equipment as needed.
  10. Logging production and residual data into departmental databases.
  11. Calibrating water quality sampling equipment.
  12. Participating in on-call rotations, responding within 45 minutes to emergencies, and logging data on weekends and holidays.
  13. Assisting with testing, maintenance, and repair of electronic control equipment like PLCs, RTUs, VFDs, and telemetry systems.
  14. Analyzing and repairing mechanical equipment such as pumps, motors, and relays.
  15. Inspecting and adjusting instrumentation and control systems across water treatment and distribution facilities.
  16. Monitoring SCADA systems, responding to alarms, and making repairs as needed.
  17. Troubleshooting electrical, mechanical, and piping issues under supervision.
  18. Performing other duties as assigned.

Minimum qualifications include a high school diploma, one year of water distribution or treatment experience, a Class “D” TCEQ Water Operator License or opportunity for reciprocity, and a valid Texas Driver’s License with an acceptable record.

Preferred qualifications include two years of relevant experience, experience with regulatory sampling, and a Class “C” TCEQ Groundwater or Surface Water Treatment License.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities required:

  • Understanding of water supply, treatment, and distribution, and TCEQ regulations.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to analyze water quality issues and communicate effectively with citizens.
  • Skill in calibrating water testing equipment.
  • Mathematical skills for measurements and data interpretation.
  • Ability to follow policies, make decisions, organize tasks, and ensure safety.
  • Adaptability, punctuality, dependability, and initiative.

Physical demands include standing, walking, handling equipment, reaching, stooping, climbing, and working at heights. The work environment involves exposure to weather, chemicals, high places, noise, and potential hazards, requiring appropriate safety measures and PPE.
