Job summary

Lansing Board of Water & Light is seeking a skilled Maintenance Mechanic to service water production equipment, basins, and wellfield systems. The role requires reading blueprints, welding, threading, and mechanical repair, with a focus on safety and reliability in a demanding environment.

• Maintains water production equipment including pumps, basins, and wellfield systems.
• Reads wells using flowmeter and analyzes results to set valve positions.
• Performs machine shop work with lathe/mill, drill press, and related tools.
• Works with safety procedures and uses PPE as required.

General Summary Of Duties

Performs maintenance on all Water Production equipment, including centrifugal pumps, air compressors, chemical feeders, threading pipes, basins, and wellfield equipment.

Essential Functions

• Utilizes hand tools, blueprints, and instructional manuals to repair plant equipment including alignment, welding, threading, assembling and fabricating.
• Utilizes fire hoses, and performs such tasks as rigging, hauling chains and sprockets, and valving to clean and maintain basins.
• Changes oil in pumps, air compressors, and related equipment.
• Sets up and takes down service rigs.
• Pulls, overhauls, and sets well equipment from pit/well.
• Disassembles repairs, maintains, and reinstalls equipment utilizing mechanic’s tools, hydrolift and well rigs.
• Tests operating wells and re-installed wells.
• Takes readings and analyzes results to determine proper valve settings.
• Performs machine shop work including set-up experience with lathe mill, radial arm drill, etc.
• Works with explosives for well rehabilitation.
• Drives truck to well site.
• Reads wells utilizing flowmeter and air compressor.
• Visually inspects wells for any problems.
• Operates mobile equipment such as trucks, cranes, workerlifts, scissorlifts, trailored welding unit, air compressors, etc. requiring use of hand and foot controls.
• Performs other duties as assigned or necessitated by job responsibilities.
• Follows BWL safety manual and wears personal protective equipment as required.
• Attends training for safety awareness or skills improvement as required by supervisor, BWL or governmental agency such as MIOSHA.

Other Reuirements

• Internal applicants must currently possess valid Michigan Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with H and A endorsements (with an acceptable driving record) or at a minimum, pass Department of Transportation physical exam and State of Michigan written portion of CDL examination within 60 days of transfer.
• Must pass forklift training and maintain forklift license.
• Must be respirator certified and fit tested.
• Must be willing to work any shift, weekends, and rotating weekly standby.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS: KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES

• Experience as a Journey Worker Maintenance Mechanic, Millwright, Machine Repair, Plumber/Pipefitter, or Boilermaker.
• Minimum of three (3) years plant maintenance experience.
• Previous welder qualification certificates preferred.
• Previous experience in the following is preferred: well field; water treatment plant; explosives; repair and/or maintenance of pumps, dust collectors, gear reducers, chemical feed systems, regulator/valves, conveyor systems, mechanical seals, valve packing, and coupling alignments; or related military experience.

Physical Requirements

Lifts/carries 50 – 75 lbs. from floor to shoulder level to position materials. Must climb and work from ladders and scaffolding. Must be able to communicate clearly through speech and in writing. Must have good visual acuity for reading blueprints, manuals, and pump settings, and monitoring scrapper chain movements within basins. Good hearing necessary to localize sounds and hear conversations in noisy environments. Must be able to work in confined spaces, on shifts, overtime, weekends, and holidays.

Working Conditions

Extreme variations in temperature, noise, dust, and dampness. Exposure to Treatment Plant Chemicals such as fluoride, chlorine, soda ash and lime. Works with explosive materials such as dynamite and associated non-toxic fumes. Possible coal dust, lead and asbestos exposure.
