Summary

Under the direction of the Chief Water Operator, controls treatment plant machines and equipment to purify and clarify water for human consumption and industrial use. May inspect sites that will ensure water quality control by performing the following duties.

  • This position is safety-sensitive and subject to random drug and alcohol screening.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

The statements below describe the general nature and level of work the individual(s) assigned to this position perform. They are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties, and skills required of personnel so classified in this position. The position description is subject to change by the city as the city's needs and requirements change.
  • Operates and controls electric motors, pumps, and valves to regulate raw water flow into the treating plant.
  • Injects specified amounts of chemicals, such as chlorine and ammonia, under the direction of the Chief Water Operator.
  • Pumps purified water into water mains.
  • Monitors panelboard and adjusts controls to regulate flow rates, loss of head pressure and water elevation, and water distribution under the direction of the Chief Water Operator
  • Maintains grounds, mowing, weed eating, etc.
  • Maintains reports and permits.
  • Picks up samples, delivers to certified labs, and monitors samples as directed by the Chief Water Operator and under their direction as required by TCEQ.
  • Under the direction of the Chief Water Operator or Water Operator III, inspects facilities at assigned sites, such as mobile home parks, sewage treatment plants, industrial plants, new homes, and other sources, for cross-connections.
  • Informs owners when unacceptable or questionable conditions are present and recommends corrective action.
  • Checks to ensure all backflow devices are tested and reports filed annually. Investigates complaints concerning water problems.
  • Read and comprehend instructions, correspondence, and memos.
  • Write correspondence and reports.
  • Utilize basic mathematical skills in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  • Compute rate, ratio, and percentages; interpret graphs.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

The preferred way to obtain the minimum knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform this position's essential duties and responsibilities are listed below. The city reserves the right to allow substitutions if a candidate or incumbent exceeds requirements in one area but may be deficient in another.

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • Texas Class "C" Driver's License
  • Customer Service Inspector Certification Preferred
  • Ability to obtain Class "D" Water License within 6 months of employment.
  • Ability to obtain Class C Water License, Class C Groundwater, and Class C Distribution License in 2.5 years.
