Job summary

The City of Winslow is seeking a Water Maintenance Worker to perform a range of unskilled or semi-skilled tasks in the operation, maintenance, and repair of the water distribution system. Under basic supervision, you will help ensure safe and reliable water delivery for the community.

This position is at-will with a six-month probationary period and requires outdoor work, physical activity, and adherence to safety standards. A valid Arizona driver's license is required.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Prior experience in maintenance/repair of water utilities systems preferred.
  • Ability to follow instructions and safety procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Excavates for mains and services using hand tools or pneumatic equipment.
  • Maintains and repairs water mains, hydrants, meters, and related services.
  • Operates dump trucks, jackhammers, air compressors, backhoe and loaders.
  • Reads gauges and maintains operating logs.
  • Collects samples for chlorine residual and bacteriological analysis per requirements.
  • Performs routine custodial and maintenance duties.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Job description

Under basic supervision, the Water Maintenance Worker performs a variety of unskilled or semi-skilled maintenance work in the operation, maintenance, and repair of water distribution systems. This position is a tentative At-Will appointment and subject to a probationary period of six (6) months from the date of hire. Upon successful completion of a probationary period, a non-management employee shall be granted regular status in the classification in which the probationary period is served.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Excavates for mains and services by using hand tools or pneumatic equipment or cleans trenches made by trenching machines.
  • Performs a variety of maintenance, construction, and repair work on water mains, hydrants, meters, and related water services.
  • Operates dump trucks, jackhammers, air compressors, backhoe, loaders, and hand tools.
  • Helps repair various machines by making adjustments and handling tools as directed.
  • Reads gauges and meters and maintains operating logs according to schedule.
  • Checks equipment for proper operation and makes minor adjustment as directed by lead worker.
  • Maintains and repairs the chemical feed system according to established procedures.
  • Collects samples for chlorine residual and bacteriological analysis in accordance with Federal, State, and local requirements or as needed for operational process control.
  • Performs routine custodial and maintenance duties.
  • Performs related duties as assigned or required.
Knowledge of:
  • Applicable local, State, and Federal laws, codes, regulations, and ordinances.
  • Equipment, facilities, materials, methods, and procedures used in the maintenance, construction, and repair of water lines.
  • Work safety policies, procedures, practices, and equipment.
Skill in:
  • Reading and accurately interpreting equipment manuals, blueprints, and electrical diagrams.
  • Following written and verbal instructions.
  • Preparing clear and concise reports.
  • Maintaining accurate records and logs.
  • Operating a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
  • Communicating effectively both verbally and in writing.

High school diploma or GED equivalent AND some previous experience in the maintenance and repair of water utilities systems; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Must possess a valid Arizona driver's license. Work is performed primarily outdoors and requires exposure to potentially dangerous tools, equipment, and machinery, hazardous chemicals, infectious diseases, and outdoor weather conditions. May be required to work in confined spaces and lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
