Job summary

Maricopa County is seeking a Water Instrument Technician to install, maintain, and repair high-precision hydrometeorology instruments across its flood control network. The role requires working at heights and handling field instrumentation in remote locations, with emphasis on safety and data accuracy.

You will troubleshoot, calibrate, and service gauges and sensors, using specialized test equipment and PC-based diagnostics, contributing to public safety and flood management efforts.

• Related post-secondary education may substitute for experience

Responsibilities

• Perform routine maintenance, inspection, troubleshooting, and repair of electronic and radio telemetric instrumentation
• Install rain, water-level, and weather gauges in remote locations and calibrate sensors
• Operate and maintain calibration equipment and electronic test devices
• Use PCs to diagnose, program, and test equipment and keep records
• Follow safety protocols and perform other duties as assigned

About the Position

As a Water Instrument Technician, you’ll be at the heart of our mission. Working under general supervision, you’ll apply your technical skills to install, maintain, and repair high-precision hydrometeorology and environmental monitoring instruments. The District operates a vast network of over 400 automated precipitation gauges across Maricopa and surrounding counties, capturing real-time rainfall data that’s essential for public safety, emergency response, and flood management. This position requires regularly working at heights to access and service equipment, so a willingness and ability to safely work at elevated locations is essential. Other Requirements

• A valid Arizona Driver’s License issued by the State of Arizona or the ability to obtain within six months of hire
• Demonstrate a thorough understanding of analog and digital electronics technology and VHF radio telemetry, and radio wave propagation
• Technicians must be able to perform and pass Basic First Aid and basic CPR, and pass Certification in First Aid, Trauma, and AED Training within six months of hire
• We Also Value Experience installing, maintaining, repairing, calibrating, and modifying electronic, electromechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic sensory and control systems.
• Experience operating specialized electronic testing tools, diagnosing problems in sensory and control equipment, and recommending corrective action.
• Skill in operating a personal computer utilizing a variety of specialized software.

Job Contributions

• Performs routine maintenance, inspection, troubleshooting, and repair of electronic and radio telemetric instrumentation
• Installs rain, water-level, and weather gauges in remote locations; lays conduit for the sensor signal lines; calibrates the sensors and maintains the station exterior and grounds
• Performs radio path verifications and operates and maintains electronic test and calibration equipment
• Uses personal computers for diagnosing, programming, and testing equipment and keeps records of instrument operation and work performed
• Operates various manual and power tools and equipment and performs other duties as assigned or required

Working Conditions

Ability to lift up to 50-100 lbs. occasionally, 10-25 lbs. frequently, or up to 10-20 lbs. constantly Climbing up to 100 ft and hiking up to 1 mile in remote areas May be subject to extreme temperatures, wetness/humidity, respiratory hazards and noise and vibration The position generally conducts business out in the field utilizing various hand tools for numerous construction and maintenance duties, including shovels, rakes, pickaxes, brooms, and varying-sized electric and hand tools. It also operates and maintains electronic test and calibration equipment and personal computers for diagnosing, programming, testing, and record-keeping Familiarization with four-wheel drive capabilities and self-recovery winching techniques will be needed from time to time. Fieldwork will often be conducted in remote locations under potentially extreme weather environments. Attire for the position will be provided and maintained by Maricopa County and has the potential for General Construction and/or Field Inspection PPE required to perform duties daily. This includes, but is not limited to, safety-toe footwear, hard hats, high-visibility vests, eye protection, and durable pants such as jeans
