Job summary

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania's Department of Human Services invites applications for a Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator at Torrance State Hospital. This role applies mechanical skills and technical knowledge to operate and maintain water and wastewater systems across the hospital campus.

Qualifications

Job description

As a Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator with the Department of Human Services (DHS), you will help maintain the systems that keep Torrance State Hospital functioning safely and efficiently. This position lets you apply mechanical skills, technical knowledge, and consistent care to important plant operations. This position is responsible for operating and maintaining water and wastewater systems to ensure safe, compliant, and efficient plant performance. As a Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator, you will perform the following duties:

• System Operation: Operate switches, valves, pumps, chlorinators, and laboratory equipment to maintain proper water and wastewater treatment processes
• Sample Testing: Collect required samples, perform daily water and wastewater analyses, and record treatment results for compliance
• Equipment Maintenance: Inspect chlorinators, repair dosing pumps, perform preventive maintenance, and complete startup and shutdown procedures
• Record Keeping: Log water and waste production data, track chemical usage, and prepare information for required operational reports
• Safety Practices: Follow safety procedures, maintain clean work areas, and identify and report unsafe conditions
• Facility Housekeeping: Clean work areas, paint, perform adjustments, and secure tools and equipment to maintain an orderly plant environment

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

• Full-time employment, 37.5 hours per week
• Work hours are 6:00 AM to 2:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
• Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

• Successful completion of the Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Trainee (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration) program and certification as a wastewater treatment plant operator for any class and type of plant; or
• Possession of a valid certification issued by the Pennsylvania State Board for Certification of Water and Wastewater Treatment Plant Operators as a wastewater treatment plant operator for any class and type of plant.

Special Requirements:

• You must possess a valid certification issued by the Pennsylvania State Board for Certification of Water and Wastewater System Operators as a wastewater treatment plant operator that is equal to or greater than Class C, Subclass 2 (Fixed Film DEP certification).
• You must possess an active Pennsylvania non-commercial Class C driver's license or equivalent.
