Commonwealth Of Pennsylvania, Warren State Hospital, is seeking a Utility Plant Operator 2 to operate a modern high‑pressure boiler plant and ensure safe, continuous heating and hot water across the facility. The role requires mechanical skill, attention to detail, and the ability to perform preventive maintenance and urgent repairs.

You will work a full-time 40-hour week from 4:00 PM to 12:00 AM on a rotating schedule, with every other weekend. Telework is not available.

Qualifications

  • One year of experience as a Utility Plant Operator 1 or an equivalent Federal Government title as determined by the Office of Administration.
  • One year of semi-skilled work experience in operation, maintenance, or repair of industrial, commercial, or institutional utility plant systems and related equipment.
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training that includes six months of semi-skilled work experience in the operation, maintenance, or repair of industrial, commercial, or institutional utility plant systems and related equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Boiler operation: Start up and shut down boilers, operate valves, and monitor gauges and digital controls to maintain safe heat and hot water.
  • Water testing: Collect samples, test water quality, and treat systems to ensure correct feedwater conditions.
  • Equipment maintenance: Maintain boilers, pumps, motors, traps, and related systems for safe and efficient operation.
  • Emergency response: Perform manual emergency fire horn operations and make urgent repairs when equipment issues arise.
  • Plant upkeep: Complete preventive maintenance, clean plant areas, and follow safety procedures during all tasks.
  • Shift coverage: Rotate shifts to ensure continuous monitoring and operation of the boiler plant.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position focuses on the safe and efficient operation of a modern high-pressure boiler plant at Warren State Hospital. The role requires mechanical skill, steady attention, and the ability to maintain and repair vital plant systems. As a Utility Plant Operator 2, you will perform the following duties:

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment, 40 hours per week
  • Work hours are 4:00 PM to 12:00 AM, with a rotating schedule including every other weekend.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • One year of experience as a Utility Plant Operator 1 (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
  • One year of semi-skilled work experience in the operation, maintenance, or repair of industrial, commercial, or institutional utility plant systems and related equipment; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training that includes six months of semi-skilled work experience in the operation, maintenance, or repair of industrial, commercial, or institutional utility plant systems and related equipment.

Other Requirements:

  • PA residency requirement is currently waived for this title.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.

  • A conditional offer of employment will require a medical examination.
  • This position falls under the provisions of the Older Adult Protective Services Act.
