Build a Career. Serve Your Community. Make a Difference.

The City of Azle is growing, and so is our Public Services team. We are looking for someone dependable, hands‑on, and interested in learning a skilled profession to join us as a Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator.

Let's be honest—wastewater treatment isn't the first job most people think of when they are looking for a career. But it is important work, skilled work, and work that makes a real difference every day. The people who operate and maintain a wastewater treatment plant help protect our community, our environment, and the quality of life we all enjoy.

This is a great opportunity for someone who likes working with their hands, learning how things work, solving problems, and being part of a team. You don't have to know everything on day one. We will help you learn the job and develop the skills needed to advance.

Why Work for the City of Azle?

We believe in taking care of the people who take care of our community.

  • Competitive hourly pay with opportunities for advancement
  • 100% City-paid health, dental, disability, and term life insurance
  • Texas Municipal Retirement System (TMRS) pension — employees contribute 7%, and the City matches 2:1
  • Vacation and personal leave available after six months of continuous service
  • Incentive pay for qualifying certifications and licenses
  • Opportunities to develop a skilled and valuable career in wastewater operations
  • Employee recognition and appreciation events
  • A supportive team environment with experienced coworkers willing to help you learn
What You'll Do

As a Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator, you will help keep the City's wastewater treatment operations running safely, efficiently, and in compliance with State requirements.

For an Operator I, this is a training-level position. You will work under the direction of a licensed operator while learning the treatment process and developing the skills needed to advance.

Your day-to-day responsibilities may include:

  • Learning and performing routine water quality testing throughout the treatment process
  • Recording and maintaining accurate operational information and test results
  • Monitoring treatment processes and making sure chemicals are feeding properly
  • Learning to recognize and respond to equipment or operational issues
  • Monitoring filters and performing routine backwashing
  • Operating tractors, mowers, and other equipment as needed
  • Helping maintain the plant, grounds, and equipment in a clean and orderly condition
  • Communicating professionally with coworkers, supervisors, customers, and members of the public
  • Performing other duties that help keep the wastewater treatment operation running safely and effectively
What We're Looking For

The ideal candidate is dependable, willing to learn, and comfortable working both independently and as part of a team. You don't need to have years of wastewater experience to apply—we are willing to train the right person.

You should be comfortable with basic math, following written and verbal instructions, keeping accurate records, and learning how equipment and treatment systems operate.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Valid Texas driver's license
  • Ability to obtain a Texas Class D Wastewater Operator License within the first year of employment
  • Ability to obtain a Texas Class C Wastewater Operator License before the end of the second year of employment
  • Ability to work independently after receiving appropriate training

Previous wastewater, water utility, mechanical, equipment operation, maintenance, or related experience is helpful but is not required for an entry-level Operator I position.

The Work Environment

This is a hands‑on job, and the work isn't always glamorous—which is true of a lot of the jobs that keep a community running.

Operators work both indoors and outdoors and may be exposed to hot, cold, wet, or otherwise unpleasant conditions. The job requires standing, walking, bending, stooping, climbing, and occasionally working in confined areas. Employees may need to lift or move materials weighing up to 50 pounds and may work around treatment chemicals and other materials used in the wastewater treatment process.

In other words, this is not a desk job. If you enjoy being active, working with equipment, learning a trade, and seeing the results of your work at the end of the day, this may be a great fit for you.
