Overview

A Wastewater Operator is responsible for operating, monitoring, and maintaining wastewater treatment facilities to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and to protect public health and the environment. This role involves mechanical, chemical, and biological processes to treat and discharge or reuse wastewater safely.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate and monitor wastewater treatment plant equipment and processes, including pumps, motors, aerators, filters, and chemical feed systems.
  • Collect and analyze samples of wastewater and sludge to monitor treatment efficiency and compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Adjust treatment processes based on test results and operational data to maintain optimal performance.
  • Inspect and maintain equipment, perform basic repairs, and report malfunctions or needed maintenance.
  • Record operational data, including flow rates, chemical usage, and meter readings, in daily logs or digital systems.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local environmental regulations and safety standards (e.g., EPA, OSHA).
  • Respond to alarms or emergencies, troubleshoot system issues, and take corrective actions.
  • Maintain plant cleanliness and safety, including chemical storage areas and mechanical rooms.
  • Assist with preventative maintenance programs and improvement projects.
  • Collaborate with other operators, engineers, and supervisors to ensure efficient plant operations.
Qualifications
