Job description

This position performs semi-skilled to skilled work necessary to operate, repair and maintain assets and equipment associated with the sewage lift stations, including but not limited to pumps, blowers, grinders, floats, and RTUs, as well as grounds maintenance; and completion of other assigned duties as required. For technician positions (Trainee through Level III), the employee will be enrolled in the appropriate Metro Maintenance Technician Apprenticeship Program (AP) and must complete the associated benchmarks and training. The incumbent works within a general outline of work to be performed, and will complete all duties in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, regulations, and standards of quality and safety.


The work is considered heavy in nature and involves walking, standing, climbing, balancing, stooping, crouching, crawling, reaching, and constantly lifting, pushing or raising objects, exerting between 35 to 50 pounds of force on a recurring basis and 100 pounds of force on a frequent basis. The work requires the following physical abilities to perform the essential job functions: balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, fingering, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, and walking.


Work environment may involve exposure to bright/dim light, dusts and pollen, extreme heat and/or cold, wet or humid conditions, extreme noise levels, vibration, fumes and/or noxious odors, traffic, moving machinery, electrical shock, heights, disease/pathogens, toxic/caustic chemicals, confined spaces; and is dynamic that requires sensitivity to change and responsiveness to changing goals, priorities, and needs.


Key Responsibilities:
  1. Inspects, operates, maintains, troubleshoots and repairs equipment;
  2. Assists with construction and installation projects as assigned;
  3. Prepares and maintains accurate work records;
  4. Performs all duties in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, regulations, and standards of quality and safety;
  5. Attends meetings, as appropriate, and training to enhance job knowledge and skills;
  6. Is considered essential staff during emergencies and may be required to work long hours at times or be at work for several days at a time in rare instances;
  7. May be required to work nights, weekends and/or holidays as needed in order to accomplish assigned work;
  8. Must also be able to be on call 24-hours per day per on call week; on call is rotated among available personnel and may require additional work hours outside of the normal work schedule;
  9. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements to Perform Work:
  1. High school diploma or GED;
  2. No prior experience required for entry level trainee positions;
  3. Must obtain DOT Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) medical examiner’s certificate within thirty (30) days from the date of hire;
  4. Valid South Carolina Class “D” Driver’s License;
  5. Must possess or be able to obtain a South Carolina Class “B” or “A” Commercial Driver’s License (with tanker endorsement) within nine (9) months from the date of hire or transfer;
  6. Must complete all AP benchmarks by the noted deadlines based on AP enrollment date;

Pay grade will be dependent upon certifications, education and work experience for applicants who meet the Apprenticeship Program benchmarks:

Training Requirements:
  1. Receives training and assists in maintaining and operating sewage lift stations, which includes operating, troubleshooting and performing maintenance on equipment, such as pumps, blowers, grinders, floats and RTUs, as well as providing grounds maintenance, etc.; and performs other duties as assigned.
  2. Basic mathematics such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division;
  3. Ability to be directed by others, as well as the ability to train and direct less experienced co-workers;
  4. Ability to interpret protocols and established methods and procedures for installing, testing, operating or repairing complex machinery or equipment;
  5. Ability to think logically, troubleshoot, diagnose or define problems, and collect data;
  6. Ability to read journals and manuals;
  7. Ability to speak appropriately and effectively to co-workers, vendors, contractors, the general public and people in other organizations;
  8. Ability to copy, transcribe, enter or post data or information using proper language, punctuation, grammar and style.
