Job description

Position Overview

This position performs semi-skilled to skilled work necessary to operate, repair, and maintain assets and equipment associated with sewage lift stations, including but not limited to pumps, blowers, grinders, floats, and RTUs, as well as grounds maintenance. Additional duties may be assigned as needed. For technician positions (Trainee through Level III), the employee will be enrolled in the appropriate Metro Maintenance Technician Apprenticeship Program (AP) and must complete the associated benchmarks and training. The incumbent works within a general outline of work to be performed and will complete all duties in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, regulations, and standards of quality and safety.

Physical Requirements

The work is considered heavy in nature and involves walking, standing, climbing, balancing, stooping, crouching, crawling, reaching, and constantly lifting, pushing, or raising objects, exerting between 35 to 50 pounds of force on a recurring basis and 100 pounds of force on a frequent basis. The work requires physical abilities such as balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, fingering, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, and walking.

Work Environment

The environment may involve exposure to bright/dim light, dust, pollen, extreme heat and cold, wet or humid conditions, extreme noise, vibration, fumes, noxious odors, traffic, moving machinery, electrical shock, heights, disease/pathogens, toxic chemicals, confined spaces, and other dynamic conditions requiring responsiveness to change.

Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Inspects, operates, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs equipment.
  2. Assists with construction and installation projects as assigned.
  3. Prepares and maintains accurate work records.
  4. Performs duties in accordance with policies, procedures, regulations, and safety standards.
  5. Attends meetings and training to enhance job knowledge and skills.
  6. Is considered essential staff during emergencies and may be required to work long hours or multiple days in rare cases.
  7. May work nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.
  8. Must be on call 24-hours during assigned weeks, with on-call rotations among personnel, possibly requiring additional hours.
  9. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • No prior experience required for entry-level trainee positions.
  • Must obtain DOT FMCSA medical examiner’s certificate within 30 days of hire.
  • Valid South Carolina Class “D” Driver’s License.
  • Must obtain a South Carolina Class “B” or “A” Commercial Driver’s License (with tanker endorsement) within nine months of hire or transfer.
  • Must complete all AP benchmarks by the specified deadlines based on enrollment date.

Training Requirements

Receives training and assists in maintaining and operating sewage lift stations, including troubleshooting and performing maintenance on equipment such as pumps, blowers, grinders, floats, RTUs, and grounds maintenance. Performs additional duties as assigned.
